Adventure Game Tier List: Machinarium, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, Syberia, The Secret of Monkey Island

second supercut! forgive the mediocre audio on the Syberia vid - we failed to swap out the temp audio before release and haven't had a chance to go back and replace it. the updated version will be in the final release!

script, narration, and (most) graphics by me, (most) editing by Willow.

Is โ€œObra Dinnโ€ in the pipeline for this series?

Scoott

Biggest shocker is hearing someone pronounce it MASH-inarium as opposed to the MACK-inarium that I have always used ๐Ÿคฏ mash for machine probably makes more sense tbh

Okay, that comment crossed a line. I'm sorry for insulting you and your audience. I haven't even played the games so I should have shut my mouth for my ignorance. Mainly I guess I was unsettled by the reviews. The first game you kind of built up its strengths and then ripped it apart like it was trash. It just got under my skin. It felt condescending in a way that I wish I could explain. Like it felt like you were praising it as a joke then being honest when ripping it's strengths apart. If that makes any sense. If not, I apologize because I can't explain my thought any better. The second game I was confused by the review (probably my head still reeling from the first). I don't know what was wrong with Sierra. And I was confused on your critique of hubs; they are enjoyed but people end up sick of by the end. The voodoo colonialism I don't understand. I mean, I thought voodoo isn't exactly good, is it? I also don't know what it has to do with colonialism. I am kind of shocked at the slave trade thing though. Respecting slave trading is not good at all. I don't get giving that part of history respect when we know it's completely wrong. I didn't get the white european shadow chaser quest thing though. And fighting a west African demon? So that apparently crosses into racism? That seems like a stretch. I mean it just felt like random buzzwords crafted into an interpretation. Then again, haven't played these games so I should have shut up by now. The third game I didn't get the review. It also felt like the game was explored with a mind already made up. And inciting incident? I mean I feel like there are many other ways to set up a narrative or build one in general. The fourth game review was mostly problematic to me was the manifesto. I felt like that manifesto being objective was just...wow. I disagreed with almost every point because I thought what that dev was saying couldn't work or didn't work actually could work if done the right way. It was an old manifesto and definitely not bad, but what ticked me off was how it was being treated as objective rather than subjective. But that's my thoughts. And don't worry. You won't have to worry about me soon probably. I may not be online anymore. Anyway, take care and good day. And again I apologize for lashing out at you like that. That was on me.

you say you felt "compelled to disagree" but you haven't actually said what you disagree with. you've only insulted me and anyone who likes the videos.

Ian Danskin

And I am sorry for the last out from me. But after this video I just couldn't bottle this up in my mind or just brush it off. I felt compelled to disagree with this.

PixeledStacksSupporter26

Okay, why do these feel like bad faith take downs? The first game especially. I was kind of shocked. And some of the criticisms are just...I can't even. I mean do people get off on these critiques?

PixeledStacksSupporter26

Fair, I suppose I misinterpreted the way you were giving out those scores. I assumed you would be issuing "expectation" scores like *now* and not based on when you played them, but that does make sense. It would otherwise be pretty hard for Secret or Mist, since they'd have to come in at 9-10 if expectations were based on decades of hype.

orestes

yeah, your expectations after hearing it glazed up for years are gonna be different from mine, having played it at 6 when it was brand new

Ian Danskin

NGL, it feels like Secret of Monkey Island got an expected of 8 *only* so it would be in S Tier. I'm not a huge adventure game fan, and I would go in expecting better than an 8/10 after hearing about it for years.

orestes

I watch all the separate little vids on Nebula, but somehow watching them as super cuts together gives them a different vibe. Can't wait for the final super video with all of them!
