The Aurora: Deleted Scene

Can I see it? ...No

Matt Avis

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year...at this time of day...in this part of Patreon...localized entirely within a deleted scene!?

That One Guy Who Makes His Name Way Too Long So You Have A Hard Time Putting It In The Credits

the animation and visual design of the aurora borealis was really cool

Michelle Hao

I was waiting the whole video for you to talk about the Aroura and I am glad its here

Melissa DAlia

magnetic poles. It's a feature of the magnetic field.

Sean Munson

hey :) This isn't on youtube is it ? It's only on patreon, no link to an unlisted video, so i can't archive it like i usealy do :( But Grey still talk about card at the end.. i am confused

Vlycop

Soooo... does the Aurora really circle the True North™ or does it in fact circle the magnetic north and cutting the scene prevented at least a number of nitwits from nudging their notoriously nerdy noses?

Solomon

I know your videos can never be long enough for me and I always want more

Paul

I found this content relevant, and I would have enjoyed it in the main video, but I also see and agree with your points on why it was deleted for a wider audience. Something that might be compelling (though I have no idea how to execute) is the Gene Wolfe style narrative where multiple readings/watchings reveal substantially more information about the subject.

Jeremy

Can we just make a podcast of you talking about random shtuff all day because I need a calming voice to just help me get through the day , LOL but seriously....

Donna Hamlet

Does anyone know where to view the director's commentary? I don't see a place to do that. Thanks.

Marc-Andre Ouimet

I wonder if there is enough deleted content from all videos and enough creativity to string them together into a cohesive story.

Robert Wilson

Would love to see a video about all of the opposites in physics that get you started.

Joseph Galliera

Cutting relatively valid content for time to punch up your core message always feels a little like drowning puppies. But unlike the metaphor, it can actually be a good idea! Think it was a decent call here.

Shane Wegner

A good call as far as making it a more watchable video, but you also saved yourself from getting bombarded in the comments... it turns out the North Pole is a terrible place to try to view the northern lights, on par with Oregon in fact. The Auroral Oval is closely aligned to the Arctic Circle(-ish) which means the displays are usually over the horizon from the pole(s) unless a solar storm is underway. [disclaimer: I haven't actually been to the poles. If my science is wrong feel free to correct me]

Doug Oke

As my college songwriting teacher once said, sometimes you just gotta kill your darlings. It might be something you love on its own, but if it hurts the overall work, it's gotta go.

Shea Chen

I think you made the right call even if many people would have found it interesting. If you don't already know the hand rules it's probably extraneous to a video ostensibly about runways. That said as someone working within the industry, conventional current makes more sense, damn you old timey scientists who damned us forever! I work in a giant 1500 MW power plant and I'm always amazed at how stupidly complex electricity and magnetism are. Simplifying it to the level of the average person and making it entertaining is one hell of a job.

Magicide

I think you were right to cut it.

Anthony Lipke

FLANKING ATTACK (it was the right call)

Dawn Earp

Shame about losing that spinning North Pole animation with the Borealis in the background. That was a stellar shot

Bradley Rounds

As a science (physics) writer myself I concur. Good decision. That middle section is definitely the slowest even after the cut. Though I love your videos so much I'd personally always take a super long cut and enjoy every minute, for the general audience it's a clear decision. The video doesn't lose much from removing it since it isn't important to the core topic.

David W (d20dave) (d_dave)

On the other hand, you now have the solar wind and aurora animation "in the can" for something in the future if needed.

Glenn Johnson

Is the director’s commentary not up yet?

Arita

Yeah, it would have been getting a bit too ... far afield? (cough)

Zack Sargent

Good decision - it would have been one tangent too many (I'm not sure how you got away with as many tangents as you did and still have a video that hangs together!). The only problem is the remaining reference near the end to lots of things being backwards. That sounded odd to me when I first watched the video since there weren't really that many backwards things. Now I understand why it was there - there used to be one more backwards thing.

Thomas Dalton

Is this something that historically would have found like as a footnote on the channel? Like, leave in the pretty animation at the north pole and mention the Aurora by name, then go down the rabbit hole in a super quick and dirty footnote video?

Justin Gillman

I love that y’all added a fast forward/rewind effect in a deleted scene. Truly only the best in grey industries.

Timat

There was no link to the directors commentary for me 😞

Kieran Lynch

I agree the cut is needed. It's a great tie in for a classroom setting since I'm sure there would have been questions about the aurora before but as is it it's just left dangling.

Tony Martin

100% agree

Tall Jeff

I agree with the cut, but love it as a deleted scene. Thanks for sharing!

Robin Johnson

Ah yes, version numbers. "FINAL FINAL Post Yar RC 4"
