Changes to the Patreon

Taking time off from the internet for a year and focusing on writing and research gave me space to think about the channel and its evolution.

Example: The Staten Island Race video that started life as part of the background reading for the Statue of Liberty video.  As you know, things… expanded, and Christopher Billopp became a video that took one year and two transatlantic flights to finish.

Now making a project that takes more than a year financially viable is a difficult undertaking for many business reasons, and for many creative reasons.

The business problems could be fixed by putting a sponsorship at the end of a video.  They pay enough to cover production costs during months where there are no videos -- but could you imagine the Billopp video ending, not with thunder and a cut to black, but with "This video was brought to you by?"

Me neither, it would have been terrible.

And, looking over the video plans I have for the rest of this year and next, there are a lot of projects like The Race to Win Staten Island that don't make financial sense without a sponsor -- and don't make creative sense with one.

The current Patreon per-video model has also caused some creative weirdness for me it didn't used to: forcing me to think about not picking a big project because, depending on how big it gets, it can easily spiral into financial non-viability.  But also not picking a small project because it won't be 'worth' posting it to Patreon.

Not to mention new and different videos.  Take Driving Across the Loneliest Road:  I wavered constantly over if it was 'too different' to be Patreon supported.  I decided not to charge for it and gave myself the worst of everything: a big project that took a long time and cost a lot of money it will never earn back.

Some videos are novels, and some videos are poems.

The per-video Patreon ends up creating weird meta-thinking about what video matches the amount of Patreon support, instead of thinking about if the video is interesting.  And it puts me in the impossible situation of trying to mind read what you, my patrons, think is a 'real' video.

So, I'm doubling down on you:

This Patreon is switching to a monthly model -- it's better for the videos and makes things creatively clear: I can trust you to make your own decision about how much you value my videos and how you want to continue to help with their creation.

Two other points:

First: since the Boarding Methods video I've focused a lot more on high-quality animation and music and live-action Grey.  These things make for better, more interesting videos, but they are expensive, and planning for them will be much better suited to the monthly model.

Second: I know we all like to joke about the long time between the videos on YouTube -- and I get it.  It's fun to do.  But it's important to me that you know these videos are the center of my creative life: it's my full-time work.  More than full time because I'm constantly thinking about them and working on them.

As always: I only want patrons to support my work on the channel if they are happy with the exchange.  There is no pressure or obligation here.  If you stay or if you go, thank you for all your support over the years.

I'm really excited about what's coming.

Comments

My wife and I love you videos and recommend them to everyone, whatever the type. You do awesome work!

Deezer4u

The Staten Island Race video was a masterpiece in story telling and fact finding. Thanks so much for doing it, and I hope you can endlessly pursue your (and by proxy our) curiosity!

BRNKoINSANITY

Congratulations!

Jon Levell

I prefer the monthly model, it helps me budget better

Stephanie Burgess

Hi Grey, long time enthusiast of your content, pleased to see you on here so I can support you, keep up the good work!

Bleep Networks

Hey Grey, Thanks for the great content! Just watched your video on the scandfinnavia... borg! I mean the Nordic countries. There you made a pledge to explain to us about the Icelandic horses. Did I missed it or you are still to do it?

Lazar Staykov

Joined Patreon for the sole purpose of supporting you, your channel, and your content. You've more than earned it!

Dan Payne

In your past you produced some of the top videos on YouTube but it appeared that your time over the last year has been devoted to your podcasts. I have reallocated funds from Patreon to you with hopes

David Connett

I opened this account just so that I could help out. Cheers.

Felipe

You make great content. Thanks for giving us a monthly way to support you.

Jesse Robbins

I've felt for a long time that a monthly program would be better for you

(GovHunter) Nick Cameron

I'm glad I watched the call to action video. It really did motivate me to re-up my pledge. Can't wait to see more content

Joshua Kristoff

First time Patreon subscriber because of this video. Also finished my school loans last month, so I no longer have an excuse to not support expeditions into the forest of infinite knowledge

John Cox

Please

Louis Albrecht

I'm all for a monthly model. Does that mean we'll get videos more regularly? :-D

Ulf Adams

It's not much - and frankly overdue - but I'm proud to have finally become a patron. Every little bit helps, right? Thanks for all the hard work and fantastic content over the years.

You being excited makes me excited. You've provided me countless hours of enjoyment, and I'm happy to support you now

John Coogan

A big fun of your stuff and glad to support you regularly :)

Graham Kerr

Also I like monthly Patreon better because it's more predictable.

Sam

You've more than earned our trust. You're one of the fathers of online educational video. Have freedom, and do great things!

Sam

Just signed up to Patreon to support this channel

Phillip Evans

I had never signed up for a Patreon account, but I am thrilled to help support this content.

Jason Cornwell Dixon

So happy to add you to my Patreon creators!! You are such a favorite and my kind of...human? :) Looks like your post is paying off; so excited to see what you’re able to do next, with all of us cheering you on ♥️

MegamiTenchi

This is amazing - first call to action that actually got me to sign up on Patreon, and I can't wait to see what you do next!

Jordan Covington

Just signed up to Patreon to support you, you are in my Top 3 content creators ever, i've learned a lot from you, Vsauce and Kurzgesagt that i feel obliged and happy to support you guys, keep up the great work please

ApocalypseMo

Hey this is fantastic, glad you've posted this video!

Erich Blume

Heck yeah, monthly Patreon is my favorite. We're trying to make sure you can keep doing you without having to worry too much about it, I'm personally all in favor of our money just getting dumped on you at regular intervals. Less of a chance of ramen weeks, I figure.

dirtknight

I think the monthly method is waaaaaaay better. I just want you to make stuff. I am sure that whatever you make will be cool. It's completely up to you how to use my money. As you say, a per video setting puts weird constraints on you. This monthly model is better. Make as many or as few videos as you want. Take my money and do cool stuff :D

Rolf Weimar

Becoming a patron is the least I can do for enjoying all your wonderful content over the years, and looking forward to supporting many more!

Michelle Kathleen Hodgson

The loneliest road was the kind of video I find as a rare treat and candy from you. I ate it up. Would it be possible to have multiple projects (like billopp and the loneliest road) in the fire at once?

Crissa Kentavr

I have seen many creators posting low quality videos on the 30th in order to secure a monthly income. I too prefer high quality content without an incentive to quickly post -just something- on the 30th of each month.

RailwayHacker

Patroned! Patronaged? Patronused? Anyway, this was a no-brainer. I only regret that I didn't do it sooner.

PC Escobar

Fun fact: I found out about you from "Stick Figures Around the World" on a reddit post when FineBros were up to their no good in the neighborhood. I bet you never though that video would give you so much publicity... but it was actually a great career move IMO, looking back. I love your videos and I've followed Hello Internet since episode 69 (binged the entire show in barely over a week, seriously it was on nearly the whole time I was awake). You and Brady got me through many solo 10 hour road trips and many sleepless nights in college studying. Things were just a bit easier with you guys there talking. HI is comfort food for my mind, and your videos are the meat. The 'Per Video' previous patreon model turned me off in the past, but I'm more than happy to donate to you monthly. I know I'm probably spending more this way, but you and the content you make is worth it to me. Thank you for all of your content, and know that I'll be continuing to support you and listening to Cortex and Hello Internet!

Josh Lincoln

Several hours after I posted this 👆 comment, I want to clarify: YouTube is where it started for me. Like 8 years ago maybe? And, the Tesla video is probably my favorite on the channel. I’ve always enjoyed your content, but that video made me think: oh man. There’s more to this guy than the stick figure videos. And, that’s how I stumbled across the podcasts. Grey, I think this is something you should pay attention to. I’m here right now because of the Tesla video. You put yourself out there and it caught me up in your other projects. Keep going where you’re going and doing what you’re doing.

Charlie Cooksey

Shoot I didn't even know you *had* a Patreon - happy to chip in now! Maybe we can even get a couple more videos a decade out of the deal, eh? =)

Simeon

Your channel and podcast 99% Invisible are the only two collections I can consistently share with, really anyone, with full confidence they’ll enjoy it too. I think that means they’re objectively good? 😁

Nick Sainato

Hello, new patreon here. I've been watching and recommending you to friends for at least three years now. Your videos have made convoluted subjects clear and concise for me. I've learned so much from your channel. Everything you do is especially great, keep it up!

Brent Bunyak

In this case, I don't mind the change...but the idea that how much I'm going to be charged(or why) could change without any notice...ugh.

Saoirse McCarthy

I am curious as to why *Patreon* has not yet sent me an email notifying me that a creator has decided to change their support model. The company should be involved in such transparency issues. Inevitably, some people will come back in a few months and asks why they've been charged per month when there's no video.

Poker Chen

As a creator reliant on Patreon, I immediately supported you. No need for extra stuff.

Hainbach

To clarify. I work in IT with a pretty good salary and make about $27000 in four to five months. It seems to me that going over a year to make a half hour video and expecting patrons to pay you a salary of $27000 monthly for the luxury is not feasible.

Tickolas

I actually prefer the monthly model to per video since it makes expenses more consistent. Happy to be a patron!

Austin Hughes

Alrighty, I'm going to be that guy. How can $27000 per video not be enough to make it financially viable?

Tickolas

Possible suggestion (not sure it's a good one, just a thought): you could put sponsorship messages in the beginning or middle of a video rather than the end. It'd be jarring, sure, but at least it wouldn't interfere with a carefully-crafted ending.

Drubbels

You're probably the only Youtube channel I have watched every single video. Some videos more than once. Please keep up the great work.

Bruno Caminada

Love your videos. Just doubled my pledge. Out of all my YouTube subscriptions, your channel is the only one I prefer to receive notifications from when a new video is available. Please keep up the great work!

Ragnar Heiðar Þrastarson

Hey Grey, I wasn’t a patreon before because I thought you were receiving very well but just became one because I’m a huge fan of your podcasts and your videos as well of course. And I very much agree with your stance on the ads. Big respect for that and hope you are able to continue doing these great videos, the last one btw was amazing! Combination of your traditional videos with the vlogging stuff was brilliant. Can’t wait for the discussion on HI

Julio Viana Nobre

I've been waffling about making a Patreon since I landed my current job and had the resources to give on it, but the second your video ended I had my wallet out. I hope you're able to get the stability and peace of mind from this change to keep making great content!

Lonely Roman Noise

Always been a big fan of your work. Happy to spend a little each month to keep you creating man. Here’s to another 20 years of CGP Grey!

Orion Dye

I just graduated from graduate school, got promoted at work, and have been consuming your content much more regularly. Happy to support you on a monthly basis!

Kathleen Dang

Throws 1 dollar at you

Julio Castro

You can support the idea of police without supporting their bad behavior.

Silas

I'm a very longtime watcher/listener and your vlog inspired me to get in here to help out. Please consider my contributions as going toward all of your projects -- YouTube, Cortex, and Hello Internet. I like them all fairly equally but can only do so much. Thanks, Grey!

Charlie Cooksey

*SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!*

Petr Flosman

Im willing to support you, but the mods in your discord server being called the Thin Blue Line is a little offputting to me and making me wanna change my mind. are you that avid of a supporter of the police as they are right now?

Lena MacKay

Honesty didn't even finish the video and signed up without a second thought. Your stuff is amazing and I wish there was more like it.

Aiden Larson

I'm honestly sorry Grey. I meant to subscribe to your Patreon a long time ago and never got around to it. Personally I much prefer to subscribe directly to the content creators I like rather than pay them via ads.

J1any3

Dude, it's totally up to you. Where would that money be going if you didn't donate it to Grey? If you'd be using it on living expenses, gas, books, etc. -- it might be a good idea to drop your subscription for now. BUT if that money's going to be spent on things you shouldn't be buying, then I'd say keep supporting Grey. Does that make sense?

Kenna

I prefer the monthly billing as well - it helps me budget - and I LOVE affordable Tiers like $1, $3, $5 & $7! (I was actually apprehensive before because I wasn't sure when I would be billed since it was per video)... Soooo, YAY! So glad to be part of your Patreon now Grey! :-D

Martha Boschuk

So as a college student in my second year I now feel pressured to drop my subscription after watching the update video. Im definitely a poor college student but I feel that with how much I get out of this channel (literally the bace idea for an entire midterm paper) I should financially support the channel. Anyone have any advice?

Kyle Nabors

Hi Grey, I feel bad for blocking ads with adblock when watching your videos so from now on I'll support you directly with the monthly $, thanks for creating these great videos about all sorts of stuff! You're great!!!

Javi 'habiwan' Puig

If putting an ad at the end of those videos mean you can make more of them, or even make them at all, I don't mind the ad. I get that you can't make videos without getting paid, so I don't mind it.

Patrik A

Grey I've signed up just to give USD and will un-sign after that, as a one-time donation. Best of luck.

Dan Zynski

I didn't even know you had a patreon, Grey, so I've been forced to just buy shirts whenever I could. I love your latest batch of videos and I've borrowed your videos countless times to help kids learn (especially the tech and science ones). The world needs room for creatives to just go out there and do their thing!

Riz

Just became a patreon today after watching the new vlog video. I've been a long time watcher and bought a lot of merch as well, but I think I'm ready to take my support to the next level! Keep up the great work!

William Li

Seeing a CGP Grey new video push notification always brightens my day! More than happy to support!

Marcus

Thank you for your videos Grey, it's the least I could do. Keep em coming!

JC 137

I'm watching these numbers rise after the video today and getting teary-eyed. This is an AMAZING response to someone who really deserves the support.

Kenna

Joined Patreon after seeing your video on this. That last video of chasing the answers, I want to see the redux when they’re open or if they ever reply to your email!

Greycupcake

Just saw your new video about these more personal projects and I’m happy to help in any way. That last stated island video was my favourite on this channel! Keep doing these.

Nicolas St-Amour

I was thinking about supporting earlier, but the "pay per video" model was always too weird to me, since I could never predict my spendings. I'm glad that's changed and I'm happy to support You! :)

Krosa

New Patreon here too. I prefer monthly models to per video ones, but that wasn't a factor in me only subscribing just now. Glad to be a Patron though. Love all your work! (and don't avoid doing sponsor spots unless an individual video's creative direction says otherwise)

SnakeATWAR

Hey Grey, I've been a huge fan of your channel since late high school in 2012. Finally an "adult" with a stable job so it feels appropriate supporting your incredible work and creative process. Thanks for everything!

Achintaya Bansal

I always look forward to your videos! I'm sorry I wasn't a patron sooner!

Brandon Nimon

who wants an UNboarding methods animation?

Marco Silva

I was a Patron for a long time until maybe a year ago when finances dictated cutbacks. I recently got back in and am so happy to help you continue making high quality content. Keep it up Grey!

Chris Reichert

Also hopping on board due to that video

BritishCynic

Hey Grey, big fan of your work. Having been a fan of your channel and with your last video, that came out, you have finally convinced me to create a patreon account and to support someone. I'm from eastern EU so can't afford much, but with you, I think it will be well spent. Good luck on your travels and keep up the awesome work <3

XAIC

@Tobias Huber patreon takes 10% (5% patreon's cut, 5% payment processing fee).

Mitchell Manning

It's probably more than you think. If I recall correctly, patreon bundles your memberships together and takes its transaction cut out of _that_. Which isn't as bad as if they took a cut from each transaction individually.

Kevin Rocker

Works for me. Easy to budget. Take your time.

hesjingixen

would be interesting to know how much of a 1$ monthly contribution actually ends up in your bank account.

Tobias Huber

I signed up because of the monthly model. It's something I can budget for and track easily and expect, so it's glad to be here.

Leorion

Personally, I prefer the monthly model as it makes it easier for me to plan contributions for the creators I like. I'm also a $1 guy, so I wouldn't worry about me.

Anthony Nardone

In the spirit of true "patronage", it would make sense to pay on a per-work basis, but in ADVANCE, at least to some degree. Paying after the fact makes little sense. The monthly model is sub-optimal, since now it would seem to put some extra "pressure" on the creator, but makes a little more sense than paying for works after the fact very much like a traditional product consumption model.

David Perek

The site automatically switches you to $1/mo.

Kenna

Thank you for the comment that it might be worth $5 to someone who can't afford it. That's much my mentality as well. I've forwarded Grey's videos to a number of people through the years, and I know they've made a difference for those folks.

Kenna

I honestly prefer the per-video model than the monthly model. I think that all your videos are "real" videos and I am happy to pay for all of them. But if the monthly model makes more sense from your point of view, then you should do that. I'm not planning to change my subscription level.

Daniel Carrera

I upped my tier a while back in recognition of your more sporadic production. This works much better.

Anthony May

Thank you for making a change you believe will make higher quality content or easier decisions for you. I'm not changing my support amount. Even though that makes giving you more money than I intended to. I think it's a little irrational, like "I don't want to lower my support, do I" even if really keeping support at the same level should mean lowering support amount a bit. Please talk about this decision on one of your podcasts, it would be interesting to hear more about this!

Sebastian Jaszczur

Works for me, I love your work and will continue my support of it.

Jonathan Kovarik

you do you

Fat Damien

I don't care how much you charge, I'm throwing my money at you.

Stephanie Luff

I think you're making a good decision - I've always felt slightly weird about only paying for some videos. Here's for many more videos!

Rui Apostolo

I was honestly surprised when I first started backing and it wasn't on a monthly basis. I hope this is a good change, frees you up from some stress, and leads to us getting more, high quality Grey vids. Keep up the good work!

Nathan G

Personally, I'm on the Adblock Absolution tier despite already paying for YouTube premium. At a dollar per-video vs a dollar a month, it's not going to make much difference to me. Just do what makes sense for you and your business, and your patrons will do what makes sense for them. Some of the higher pledges may cut back or drop out, but others like myself will stay and go from paying 8-10 times a year, to paying 12, which should balance out somewhat. And if it lifts some creative pressure you might be feeling, maybe it'll mean better videos in the long-run. Everybody wins!

UpLateGeek

Monthly is more comfortable for most patrons as well, for a simple reason: it helps financial planning.

Igor Sokolov

I'm on board, and bumped up my amount because I loved the vlog on your Tesla trip so much I wished I could pay towards it, but Patreon is stinky about one-time payments. Hope to see you back occasionally on the Reddit or Twitter, so your community can say hi!

Elizabeth Meisterling

I prefer monthly anyway :)

killergege

I just became a supporter and I thought it was weird it wasn't monthly. I support other artists monthly and it's definitely the better move.

Brandon Beall

Bottom line: We want you to create more videos in a financially viable and personally rewarding way.

Garrett

You weren't charging per month? I had no idea! Damn, now I feel like I should pay back-payments for all those months I missed.

fostermoody

I've commented on this before but - you've always produced good stuff that's engaging and educational and all, that's why I started keeping tabs on you as an artist in the first place! And lately I have definitely noticed the degree to which you've amped up your quality lately, which I very much appreciate. I'm rooting for you to find a way to keep the work that you do financially viable, and to allow you at least the option of a healthy work / life balance - and I'm absolutely down to switch to a monthly model, because at this point I feel like you've proven yourself a pretty safe bet.

matt

The Tesla video is my favourite video you’ve done (this is coming from someone that loves complaining about voting systems). I’m quite disappointed to learn I didn’t help contribute to it. No problem with the monthly charge, keep up the good work :)

Alexander Whattam

Grey, you are undervaluing the originality of your content. I would 100% watch your content even if you had sponsorships. It doesn’t make a damn difference.

Daniel Swiecki

While many channels do this I believe it's technically against YouTube policy to have a non-YouTube ad anywhere but at the end of your video.

Thomas

Great plan! While I wouldn't complain about a slight increase in your volume I don't actually want a ton of videos. One or two a month is fine.

Thomas

Don't forget that sponsorship bits don't have to come at the end of every video. For some you could just put them at the start or in the middle.

Dave Nattriss

What does Nebula (watchnebula.com) do for creators like you? I am confused why Patreon creators need another distribution network. Thanks.

DixonLu

Grey - keeping your content up and running is worth it for the world and worth the monthly change. Hopefully it will keep the creative process working. Over the years I've used your videos as teaching tools with my daughter many times (you know, there's a Grey video about that ....) We loved the Staten Island video - the unique format kept my 14yo daughter on her toes. I had a hint of what to expect due to Cortex ... but she was delightfully taken off guard by each of the fade to black, followed by a, "he didn't‽" of surprise when you did. Loved it!

Eric Zago

Uhm... another surprised person: "it wasn't monthly?!". Keep up good work (and it may be odd, eccentric and quirky! <3)

Wojciech Kapcia

I really like a monthly model because I feel like it's less transactional and more like actual patronage - I like what you're doing and want you to be free to do it in the way that works for you creatively. The things you make are better that way and that's better for us too. Thanks for the update and the great videos.

Lila Sadkin

Cool, I prefer monthly. LOVED the race to win staten island. Both very interesting and shows the effort that goes into the videos. Happy to contribute monthly

Carlos Diaz

Thank you for the trust. Keep focusing on what's interesting. I support the journey that takes you there.

Maxwell Frame

I can't believe it took you this long to change to that model. I have no problem putting money in regularly, because when you deliver, you deliver well.

Rex Schrader

I currently pay on the $3 per video model, so I will trial changing my subscription to the $1 a month tier. I appreciate the quality of your videos and take no issue with the frequency of your uploads and understand this represents the sheer amount of time and effort put into them. I genuinely take no issue with the length of time between each video. However, paying even $1 monthly means I could be paying upwards of $6 per video which doesn’t represent value for money to me. Like I said, I will trial $1 per month but will sadly probably stop supporting the channel if it doesn’t (as I suspect) represent good value for money.

William Tench

I used to think the "per-thing" model was objectively better, but you put my line of thinking as of late into words quite effectively. This makes sense. Thanks for the heads up!

Bonkleton

All good chief. Love your videos. Amazingly well researched and presented. I'll keep my monthly subscription the same even in months you don't post a video... just like I have for the last 4+ years.

TGBO

Thank you for explaining your thinking. I am happy to move to a monthly model. Keep the quality coming!

Nick Wadlow

I love your videos regardless of the type. Absolutely happy to change to monthly support. Keep making whatever you want to make. I have no doubt they will be great.

Sam Harris

I was also surprised that it wasn’t monthly whenever I became a patron. I’m happy to support you consistently!

Katherine Nally

Makes sense. I’m not going anywhere.

Ben Wagner

This totally makes sense. I'm sticking around!

Andrew Janke

? there is a $3 tier?

Johan Thomsen

I think the change to a monthly subscription makes perfect sense, for you and everyone who wants to support your channel. I’m so glad to see all these comments saying the same thing I’m about to, I won’t be lowering or dropping my payments.

Michael Ware

Fully support this. Makes sense for you, makes it easier for patrons themselves to budget (ie not have a "surprise" of multiple videos and their per video cost coming out shortly after one another), should lead to more high quality videos. Win win win all around.

illustro

Finally! Thank you for making this change! Man, it’s a little frustrating to actively want to support an artist and then watch them dither and debate about accepting my support and trying to be fair about it, etc. I WANT you to do well and I’m happy to budget a little to help. Shut up and take my money! ;) Oh, P.S. Please tell Dirk from Versetilitism to make the same change.

Chris

You are probably my favourite content creator currently active in any medium. I am excited to see what comes next, and where the rabbit hole leads.

Joshua Harris

I appreciate the full disclosure and explanations as to why you're making this switch. I'm keeping my support at the same tier and I wish you the best in creating great content for people to enjoy. As an aside, I recently bought a Tesla and having loved your roadtrip video I named it "Son of Bailey"

Kevin Clack

First, I'm fine with the monthly model. Second, I've always trusted you to make interesting videos... short or long, poem or novel, etc. Third, I think that the long times between videos could easily be alleviated (for Patrons) by posts like this giving us hints or tidbits so we have some idea what might be in the pipeline.

Don Rude

Grey, I see some people are planning to lower their payment to adjust, so I'm gonna do the opposite. Your videos have been so terribly great that this was like a wake up call to me. I have a job and some money to spend, why not spend it on my favorite youtuber?

Thekla

Being a patron of someone’s art doesn’t mean I am purchasing content, but rather time. It is unlikely that a video you make would be worth 5$ (to me). However, it is undoubtedly worth 5$ to those who can’t afford it. Per month is what I budget anyway :)

Mr lncredibIe73

Part of what makes your channel so great to subscribe to is that, as time moves on, I find myself discovering different types of videos that resonate with me as interesting. I didn’t used to watch vlogs before yours: it’s what made me consider watching and subscribing to Casey. More and more, it’s been feeling like an education in storytelling. It started with stick figures and has evolved so many new and interesting forms. I need your efforts to be financially viable and therefore support any changes that would help you make it so.

Varun Pramanik

I get the idea, but now I would pay 10$ per video. That is a bit too much. Maybe you can add a lower tier with like 2$ or 3$ a month?

Martin Embeh

So what happens if I pledged $1 a video do I have to re do my pledge to $1 a month or is the site defaulting me to that automatically

Max Roberts

I just want to pay for “good stuff”. All of the stuff you’ve done has been interesting and made me think about things I wouldn’t have otherwise thought about. The monthly sounds like a winner to me!

Todd Rinaldo

Love your video's. I'll keep supporting you!

Marco

My favorite ad of all time, then :)

Oren Milman

Glad to see this change. Makes much more sense for your content schedule.

Rachel Maschhoff

The driving video felt like an ad.

Chris Fallins

I'm just surprised you hadn't done this sooner. Absolutely fine with me, just keep that sweet, sweet content coming.

Thomas Boys

I totally agree with your reasoning in general; I think it makes more sense for you to be on a stable monthly model that doesn't require you to think about how many videos you have to produce and the like. At the same time, I'm dropping from $5 to $1... it's not that I use Adblock (YouTube Premium, baby), but looking at your update schedule, you basically release a video every ~2 months, maybe. I seriously can't justify paying $10-15 for a single 5-10 minute video, as much as I enjoy it, so unless something changes, I'm gonna have to stay at a lower tier, sorry.

Marconius

Now i feel better about supporting you on pateon.

Jeppe Christensen

I love the content you’re creating. Upping my subscription level right now. Keep making great videos.

Jon Borg

I’ve doubled my subscription amount, take as long as like.

Tinnylechat

I had a little joke with myself that I had a bet with you, Grey. If you managed to put out a video in a month then you won the bet, and I'd have to give you $15. Otherwise I would keep my money. I've seen other creators shift from per video to monthly patreon models and for at least one creator, I saw the quality of his content plummet; suddenly low quality vlogs were "content", songs on soundcloud were "content", even tweets became "content" and I don't support him anymore. I don't see you going that way, but at the same time I didn't see that from him either. Ultimately I don't control what you do, but if you do switch, then I will decrease my pledge, as I base my patron pledge off something like a video every two months.

LafferStyle

I'm glad to hear you're switching to a monthly model. This makes sense for me, so I can accurately budget every month, and you so ... you can accurately budget every month. Your videos are completely worth it.

Kenna

I always wondered why you decided to only charge per video. Your videos always take a long time to complete, that's why they are so amazing! I always wanted to be able to support you on a regular basis, so that when you have a project that takes a long time to complete, you can afford to do so. TL;DR: I'm happy you took this step and am looking forward to your next videos!

Felix Dreier

To me, the important thing is that you are able to create the videos with minimal pressure about finances. As long as this does not cause a pressure to prioritize quantity (or the S word) over quality, I believe it should be fine for anyone.

R. Emre Basar

I love what you do. I'm proud to be one of your Patrons. I'm staying.

Fostena

You're not the first creator on Patreon to have similar thoughts. This makes sense to me, and it's clear you take this issue seriously. I'm happy to continue supporting your work on a monthly model.

MR

There's nothing wrong with setting a small monthly pledge rather a high per-video reward. That's what I'm gonna do.

For what it's worth I'd be happy paying the per video price regardless of what the video actually had in it. But this works too

Luke Van Epen

I have no problem being a monthly supporter. If anything it would give me immense satisfaction knowing that I was part of the reason a video was made. :)

Dennis Negron-Rivera

You got my support, Grey. I can absolutely see how per-video charge clearly doesn't make sense with your production "schedule".

I hate per job supports, I'd rather just had one payment that I know goes out instead of it jumping around every other month. Keep up the good work

Daniel Shade

Consistent salary over spec makes more sense.

Edward Duffy

I'm staying ofcours! Good luck grey!

Olle isaksson

I really enjoy the way the videos are evolving. I'm happy to pay monthly to keep that process going.

Get To Know Nature

I was actually pretty surprised, that you were not on monthly model by default, given how many (on the lower side) videos you produce per year. I am OK with monthly model and if that means more interesting and funny videos, I am raising my contribution as well. Now it's your turn.

Miro Hudak

Switching to monthly makes total sense. Quality over quantity and I'd absolutely pay for more road trip stuff.

Kevin

More than happy to keep supporting your work. Your videos should be mandatory material at schools!!

Carlos Franco

Keep up the good work, happy to pay by the month!

Reinier Ladan

For what it's worth, I'll happily support on a per-monthly basis

Ruben Wikhaug

Your Staten Island video was so excellent, it's why I pledged on Patreon. Do what you gotta do - I can't wait to be here for the ride!

Boter Bug

I would rather you just charge for every video honestly. I'm in college and don't feel as comfortable paying every month. I understand the reason for the change, however. Thank you for the update. It's nice to have you back.

I’ve always preferred a monthly model vs. per creation one, so I’m very happy to hear about the change!

Lauren Holm

Seriously. Not even a question. I'm here to do whatever it takes for you to do what you do so well.

Zachary Hilliker

Makes much more sense! Looking forward to what’s coming!

If it helps keep the good stuff coming then sounds good to me!

Tom Cronin

While I understood the premise behind the “per video” model, I think the monthly model makes more sense given that Patreon is a way to give more to a creator than just AD revenue. I’m perfectly fine with a monthly charge. Keep up the good work, CGP Grey. I’ll happy keep being a Patron.

John Bray

Certainly happy to support the creative process as it's happening, not just when it gets published. Keep on making great stuff!

Keenan Shumard

If this gives you the freedom to do more videos similar to the Staten Island one (which I loved) then I am more than happy with this change. Really looking forward to what you have in store!

This is awesome news <3
