At a Passover dinner hosted by our friend Kai, Kai talked about the song “Dayenu”, which means “it would have sufficed”:
If He had brought us out from Egypt,
and had not carried out judgments against them
— it would have sufficed!
If He had carried out judgments against them,
and not against their idols
— it would have sufficed!
And so on. That song, and its description as “the opposite of hopelessness”, inspired this one, as I melded it with an idea I’d been working on about the love of the sun, which by its nature, cannot see darkness, as it illuminates whatever it looks at.
The art reflects Billis’s own experience of the song, which reflects an early memory of seeing his grandmother in the hospital towards the end of her life. She told him a story of how, during a time of intense doubt in her life, she stood by a window, with her hand on the sill. Suddenly, a beam of light the same size as her hand fell on the sill next to her, then moved to cover her hand. She felt strongly then that God loved her, and the doubt was lifted.

Lyrics:
It would have been enough if, through endless clouds,
A beam or two reached to the grass in the ground
If gray red and brown were all that I knew
But when the sun is in love with you it dresses you in blue
It would have been enough if once in my life
An hour of day broke through the night
I’d always remember the light I once found
But when the sun is in love with you, it comes back around
Sometimes when you look, I can’t meet your eye
I cast my head down and hide from the sky
I could not forget the darkness in me
But the minute you looked there was none left to see
It would have been enough if I had stayed cold
And seen through the glass a shimmer of gold
And believed you were keeping someone else warm
But when the sun is in love with you, it opens the door
Sometimes when you look, I can’t meet your eye
I cast my head down and hide from the sky
I could not forget the darkness in me
But the minute you looked there was none left to see
