December Newsletter: Watching and Waiting

My winter so far has been cold, calm, and quiet. Cold, as I haven’t put up much of a fight against the changing weather. In previous years I’d crank the heat to create a bubble for myself; this year, I’m pushing myself to get more warmth out of exercise and cooking. It seems I notice the cold less every day.

It’s been quiet because I unsubscribed from Spotify, along with a load of other streaming services and apps I barely used. My habit of filling the space of silent hours with music or podcasts started seeming more and more like just that - a habit, meant to quell anxious symptoms, serving more to continue the cycle of anxiety.

In its place, a richness of quiet spaces has been filling my days. There are hums of the fridge in the kitchen; there are birds in the morning and throughout the day. These are tapestries that demand your time to be fully enjoyed; it took hours alongside them before I was able to start settling into them. What I feel in them now is the quiet waiting that I always feel in the time before Christmas. I remember times when I was very young, sitting and watching the Christmas tree, lit up in a darkened room. It felt like a watching, not just a looking, though nothing was going on; its presence felt like a story that was in the process of unfolding, its gifts underneath hints of the future. Like any kid, I very much wanted the tangible toys that were inside those boxes, but the seeds were being planted to start watching a larger story unfold, one where gifts of love come out of the darkness, in forms unknown.

To reveal some forms you’ll be encountering soon:

As this month will bring us to the end of archival material we can share, and as the following months will have us focusing on rehearsing new material, the following changes will take place to our Patreon in the first half of 2025.

Instead of Archive Sundays, every month we will share 1 full show recording from the archives, newly mixed from the board multitracks. We will be picking our favorites, and your requests, from our 2018-19 tour with Naked Giants, and our 2022 tour on MADLO. Feel free to cite shows you’d like to hear in the comments below.

Instead of Archive Sunday streams, the upper two tiers will get a general band stream once a month, with opportunities for Q&A. (Band’s Delight stream will continue on with random selections.)

Instead of monthly performance streams, I will be posting 2 new songs a month, written and recorded in a few days each, plus 1 rerecorded old song from the high school vaults. We are working on getting a 4-track restored to fully functional; I’ve never used one for recording, and am excited to try it out as a return to the fast-paced, experimental recordings of early CSH. Songs are not guaranteed to be high-quality, but I will try and stick with ideas that feel like good ones.

Thanks for sticking around, and stay tuned for December streams soon!

Hello Will, please upload some of your oldest shows! Really interested in any video footage (that isn't on yt) of the early years of the band and how far you've come! Maybe 2012? Don't really know if there are any more videos but it would definitely be interesting! :))

Arthur Holmes

thanks Will, this is awesome!!! I thought about it while gardening, which is getting hard, as the sun is intense here now. I wrote a poem responding to it, thinking about Decembers, and the heat, and winter, and sensory tapestries. limestone plateau/Polistes dominulus all these wide, wide roads and the grevillea blanching in its pot makes the wasps go mad. one of these days I’ll go mad, brick by brick sprayed grey, and the fan yawning on its hinge makes it hard to sleep. can’t grow a canopy fast enough, every year a little worse, the dirt sprayed black, and wide, wide roads and date palm trees. wretched stovetop city my heart can’t help but love in a burning delta the sweet, mild winter. there is a tide, glistening, that shirks this place. every year, a promise that moves away, like the moon. one of these days I’ll go free. every December, a different dream. if winter is a seed, this is the carcass fermenting in the sun. part of life, I know, but, oh, the smell. there are flowers in the tapestry, too, and hoverflies, lacewings, djiti djiti warbling. an asphalt-sting-crush of metal makes us jump. this great limestone plateau, heat-soaked. is it snowing in Medina? every December, a different dream. one of these days I’ll get some sleep. Polistes dominulus is a species of aggressive European wasp introduced to Australia. It’s considered a pest and frequently drives native species away; increasingly warm summers have only boosted its survivability. I have a nest in my roof right now, sadly, that I am trying to get rid of… excited also for 2025 on the patreon, the new stuff sounds awesome!! two new songs a month plus a rerecorded song?!?!?! spoiling us...

Luka Buchanan

really excited and sad to hear these new updates to the patreon !! really going to miss the performance streams as they do have it's own excitement to them but i am really excited to hear the new and rerecorded songs !!

fangf4ce

OMG! I would love to hear the may 20 show at the commodore ballroom in Vancouver! Yall played a version of its only sex that I've had stuck in my head ever since!

Pouty

At work I found myself listening to podcasts and music constantly, and I also tried a couple of days where I didn't listen to anything and just let my mind wander. Not exactly silent contemplation since I'm doing work, but it's been interesting to notice where my mind wanders, and I find myself just having more time to think about things going on in my life or creative projects I'm working on, which is a positive I think. I look forward to the new streams! Seeing what sort of songs come out of just a few days of writing/recording will be interesting, it's always fun to see what comes out of that sort of spontaneity, even if it's not necessarily high quality. As for shows I'd love to hear one of the earlier shows from the 2022 tour where y'all were still playing There Must Be More Than Blood and Burning Man. Also Philadelphia since that's the show I was at and I laughed when you did the David Lynch "and if you can believe it, it's a Friday once again" thing.

MaeveDX

your passion is so infectious dude

Luka Buchanan

For the re-recordings, You Were Meant To Shine is genuinely one of my favorite songs ever, and hearing it with your current voice would be really cool! In case you were looking for ideas of which songs to do :3

qtf0x

I felt the same way about streaming services/apps, and recently removed YouTube from my life entirely. The calm and quiet that came with that decision has been more than worth it. You're right that filling those quiet moments with distractions doesn't always make them more full. I hope you're feeling more peaceful and present :) Since you're taking requests, I'd love to hear a board mix from the 5/11/22 show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, if you have it! I was there and it was amazing, but I've only ever found one recording of any of the songs, and it's from someone's phone.

qtf0x

We need a re-recorded version of Will's bio LMAO

elvis

Jack

:3<< Im glad that your winter has been going well! Im excited to hear your new music and possibly a new album in 2024. I would love to hear open-mouthed boy if you guys preformed it! Hearing it live would be beautiful.

Baconcat

This is AMAZING news. I’m not sure if this would count but I have absolutely always wondered what KS would’ve sounded like if chosen for twin fantasy and ultimate released on Face to face. A re-recording of this song would be a musical dream come true 🙏

Oliver W

id love to hear any performance where you guys played costa concordia if there are any , it would mean EVERYTHING to me 🙏❤️

Cobalt 08

Id love to hear that full opening set of your March 26th 2022 House of blues show where the group all played songs from their own projects! Only a few recordings ever surfaced to my knowledge, and id love to hopefully have that come to light :)

gravegurl

I’m requesting the 2018 Newport Music Hall show in Columbus, Ohio

Ikimaska

so excited to start hearing some new stuff!!

caitlyn

Archive Sundays have been fun, but I'm excited to hear some performance recordings and stuff from the vault next year! If you have recordings of any live covers I'd especially like to hear those, I love seeing CSH's take on different songs. Happy holidays everyone :)

Hannah

Happy cold and quiet winter!

Ai Miller

i’m super excited to see some of the new stuff coming in 2025!! i’m a big fan of art constantly evolving and changing, so i’ll definitely be tuned in for that. as for shows we’d like to see released, 2018 vera project, 2018 portland crystal ballroom, 2018 brooklyn market hotel, and 2019 tampa orpheum theater would be awesome to see!!

mistamandrew

I’m very excited for these new changes! A major reason I fell in love with your art was because of its constant change. You inspire me tremendously to work on what my soul desires to work on, to find a new style each day, and to endlessly pay attention. Your art has inspired me to lock my phone away at times, to unwind, recharge, and notice these tapestries that require my full attention. Your art has had a major influence on my art, and so whatever 2025 has in store for the CSH patreon, I’m interested!

Finn

Also if you have any recordings of the September 21, 2018 show at cats cradle NC I’d love to hear it! That was the first time I saw y’all live !!

Alex Stewart

Any naked giants show with powderfinger + waves of fear = amazing

very.happy.ben

AHHHHHHHHHHH BACK TO TAPE WILL YES!!!!! this came out of left field but it’s exactly what i needed

very.happy.ben

asking for vera project 2018 on behalf of nobody in particular

Caiden

Every once and a while I'll take a look at this patreon and you are always feeling the way I'm feeling or thinking about similar things. It's very comforting to see someone else's perspective on things that are similar in my life entirely unrelated to mine

Javy

That version of tmbmtb became public last month I think, it's only like 40 seconds worth of an early version and Will going back to the Tell Me When My Light Goes Green cover

surfjerk

Woooo!!!! Christmas came early 😭 Glad to hear things are going good! I’ve tried to add more silence into my life, I always feel like I try to fill that void with music or background yt videos, recently I’ve picked up going on longer walks each day and some meditation techniques that I found helpful

Gonty

I resonate a lot with the start of the essay, about filling silence with music or videos or something else. This was second nature to me for ages because i couldnt fathom being alone with my thoughts- everytime i tried it i just spiraled. But it has improved since and now I can sit in silence for a while without feeling the need to listen to something or other. Also, super excited for the new songs coming out:)

Fionn

vera project 2018 would be good for the early madlo stuff. also O2 2018 would be cool for the early version of There Must Be More Than Blood

Cash Carey

I’ve been similarly in a place where I feel like media is just always playing in the background these days, mostly TV. The power went out at my apt last night and I was surprised how much I enjoyed things just being quiet, without even the buzzing of the fridge. I also finally deleted my facebook, which was a long time coming since it only served for doomscrolling. I’m trying to get used to the boredom that comes without it, but I also find that when there’s no background noise (literally and mentally) that it’s easier for me to find valuable and fulfilling things to do with my time. Loved reading this, feels like my head’s been in the same space.

Em

Would love to hear a recording of the Tampa or Orlando shows from your 2019 Florida jaunt! Still some of my favorite sets I’ve seen! Excited to hear what y’all have in store for 2025 :)

Talk About The Passion

This is big news... also if you're taking requests, Vera Project 2018 would be cool! I'd love to hear the early versions of Hollywood and Stop Lying to Me in full! Other cool ones I think are 2020 The Anthem (for the acoustic opening set), 2019 Asbury Hall (For the Seven Nation Army Cover), or 2020 Palace Theatre (First show for masquerade tour). There's a whole lotta shows I'd love to hear but my autism can wait another day

surfjerk

This sounds amazing I’m so glad I can support y’all and see what is to come in all of ur creative endeavors, happy holidays 🥰🥰🥰
