Production update 2021-10-29

Hello everyone!

Let's start with a quick postmortem of Part 3. It was very well received, and died down relatively quickly. I'm just fine with that - I think overall, this ABC series is going to be a slow burner that will remain an asset of my channel for years to come. After 6 days it's sitting at #7 of my 10 most recent videos. Certainly below average, but it's fine. Wouldn't be an average if everything was above it, right?

I took a break for a few days, doing other stuff in the meantime, and just relaxing. I worked on subtitles, but it takes a lot of time to make proper subtitles for a video, so I didn't quite finish that. The issue is that while you can paste a script and YouTube will automatically time the subtitles around the audio, the result is formatted automatically and can be pretty annoying to read. Things
like line breaks in
places where they shouldn't be. Or
right after the first word of
a sentence. It's just not very
easy to read.

But at the same time, badly formatted subtitles are still better than auto captions. So, what I'm going to do today is publish okay-ish subtitles now, and gradually work on proper subtitles to release them some time in the future. I've been stuck on the mindset that if I do it, I must do it right, but nothing prevents me from posting a sub-optimal version while I work on the proper one.

Yesterday, I began proper work on Part 4!

Like Part 3, it begins by making a chronological list of improvements, taking notes on what new discoveries led to each improvement. That's what I did last night. Today, I'll be making a list of all the talking points (each video usually has about 40 or so), and from there, I'll be ready to start writing the actual script. Around that time, I'll start getting a better idea of what scope Part 4 will have. I'm again aiming for something around 30 to 40 minutes, but I'm willing to go up to 45 if it gives a better narrative.

After Part 4 is over, I'm considering possibly going for a change of pace and break it up with a speedrun explained. SM64 is really fun to work with, but I also don't want to burn myself out on it. I have an idea lined up for a speedrun explained that I think would be great: the right mix of short length, crazy mechanics, and a well known game.

So! The progress is very simple right now:

It can only go up from there!
