Production update 2021-08-24

Hello everyone!

Overall I had a pretty decent week! I finished up the script, showed it to people for review, cleaned up a few things (suspiciously few, I'm surprised I didn't make more mistakes than that...), and started recording. I've been recording about 10% of the script per day, and I am now nearly halfway done with that.

I also started editing! I skipped the intro section for now because it's gonna have visuals in it that I'm not 100% sure how I want to make them just yet. Also, a compilation of the clips that are yet to come, but I'm gonna add it in later, once I do have the clips because I used them later. But, I did edit about a minute and a half worth of stuff past the intro. So, editing has officially begun as well!

This means I can now give you a proper estimate of the progress in the way I usually do:

Part 2 begins with a look at some of Pannenkoek's first contributions to the ABC, which include stars that make extensive use of cloning. Cloning is an integral part of the ABC, so I knew I had to explain it in full detail for everyone to understand it every time it's used over the years. But it's one hell of a beast to tackle. After recording and inserting the cloning explanation into my timeline, I found out that this is going to take 14 minutes to explain.

I don't have anything particularly interesting to show in the editing department just yet, but in future updates, I'll give some sneak peeks and cool insights.

Now for the bad news. My new landlord sucks. I forget if I've told this story before. In short, our apartment building was sold to some dude whose sole purpose is to renovate the building and double the rent. Thankfully, we have laws protecting us from that, and there isn't any problem with the building critical enough for him to get around those laws and evict us.

But, that doesn't stop him to show up unannounced yesterday at 8 am with a construction crew and doing work on the exterior of the building, shutting us in, forcing us to park the car away and to remove the AC unit during a heat wave, and finally, showering every outdoor surface, including balconies, window screens and windows, in fine grout dust.

The fun doesn't stop there: since yesterday morning, I have construction crews walking back and forth right in the office window, yelling at each other, using power tools and grinders all over the outside walls. Needless to say, this makes my recording efforts grind to a screeching halt. I did manage to edit about a minute and a half yesterday, but honestly, it's a bit hard to focus in this environment. Today is going to be even worse, as they're much louder, and it's already getting uncomfortably warm inside, even before noon.

So, production will inevitably slow down this week. Tomorrow, my girlfriend and I are getting out of the house for the day. After that, we will see. I don't know when they will be done, as communication with the landlord is very poor. He "didn't think" of warning us that he'd be doing this at any point before showing up and ringing our doorbell to tell us to move our car. Minutes later, scaffolding was all around the place. He generally acts and talks in bad faith and he's already looking forward to us moving out, so we've been actively avoiding contacting him.

Alright, that's it for this week. Next week will probably be a short update production wise, since I'll be taking a few forced days off. I hope you guys have a good one!
