AK: the vacations continue for Andrew with a trip to Thailand where many a great foods were consumed. We also ate durian which has the consistency of what I assume rotten human flesh feels like. It's so smelly they give you gloves to wear while you touch it. 10/10 would not eat again. The durian candy is tasty though.
Then back to Seattle to record the NYI music video. It was a fun shoot day at a small location by the water. Besides painting the set there really wasn't much to do so I was mostly just fucking around filming and being a nuisance.
Finally we hit the road again after a long and well-deserved break but this time with Naked Giants! It was a really cool change of pace to create a supergroup on stage where we could make really deep arrangements and walls of sound. I also loved how down they were to indulge my instagram antics and help make videos. I would say some of our best online content was made in this era.
SD: I remember being kinda unsure if the Naked Giants guys would all be down to join us to fill an expanded lineup for the upcoming tours. But thankfully they were super down for the change of pace even if it meant a bunch more work on their part. So the first thing we did when we got the go-ahead was to find a practice room bigger than our current 50 sq. ft. one. We lucked out as there was a newly available one right down the hall that would comfortably fit 7-8 people. It didn't take them long to pick up the songs, and Will definitely enjoyed revamping the arrangements for the extra voices.
We booked this one-off show a couple weeks before we would start doing a promotional run for the new album. The show was in the college town of Bozeman, Montana at the newly reopened Rialto Theatre. Which was probably a little out of the way, but we were excited to be one of the first acts to play at the new venue. The drive was a long one, so we split it up and spent the night in Spokane. We got there around dinner time and decided to play a couple rounds of laser tag down the road at this huge complex that caught our eye. It was super fun, but I don't think any of us managed to beat out the little kids who seemed like regulars.
We got to the venue in the early afternoon to load in, and right away we were amazed with how pristine the venue was. Most of the time venues this size smell of stale beer and mold, but we must have gotten there just before the heavy daily use took its toll. We had a short scheduled photo shoot at the bar upstairs right before the doors opened for the night. I don't quite remember what it was for, but there's a few black and white photos that get used from time to time from that.
The Naked Giants kicked off the night and got the crowd super pumped with a psych-rock focused set. We could tell early on it was going to be a great fit because after their set they were immediately ready to go back on again. I think we played a mainly Twin Fantasy set with some other favorites sprinkled in. The crowd had a great time and especially loved the cover of "Do What You Gotta Do" towards the end. Overall this show was a great way to transition to touring the new arrangements with an expanded lineup because we already had a packed schedule in the months ahead.
