AK: The Boys Go On Break! After a massive run of shows we get a much deserved gap in touring. Will was off to Chicago to help work on Stef Chura’s album and I was doing a bunch of random shit like growing weed in my closet, building a pc, football games, and traveling to Vegas. It was time to blow off steam and spend time with friends I hadn’t seen in months, all with a little extra cash in the pocket!

Around this time, we finally wrapped up work on Twin Fantasy FTF. Rather than spend an idle moment acknowledging this as an achievement, I went straight to work producing an album for Stef Chura. I headed to Detroit with Adam Stilson for two weeks, where we composed, rehearsed and tracked 11 new songs (“Degrees” had been recorded earlier in the year in Chicago). We visited the Motown studios on a free day, as seen here.

In retrospect, signing on for this was a mistake. I was burning the candle at both ends, and the result was that I had a lot of unaddressed anxiety and a limited amount of patience. Stef’s album took a lot of work putting together, and when Stef decided she wanted to take what we’d done so far and have it re-mixed by a new engineer, I dropped out of the project altogether, abruptly and ungracefully. It was another year before it would end up getting finished, and was released as “Midnight”. I’m glad the album got done in spite of my leaving - she’s a great singer, and it’s a great set of songs.

Yeah, the only photo I found from these couple weeks was a blurry shot of my octatrack in our basement practice space. I guess this was when I bought it used from some guy off craigslist soon after the newer model was announced. We met at this coffee shop open later in the evening, so I could I fumble over the buttons for way too long to test everything I could dream of. But yeah the price seemed too good to be true, so I wondered if he would crack in one of the many awkward silences to just show me something broken. He was totally cool with it though, and nothing came up. I'm pretty sure I missed the bus stop on my way home reading through the manual haha.

This also must have been around the time of the Nervous Young Inhumans music video shoot. I think I had work or something during the day, but I remember Emily and I ran into Will in our neighborhood a day or two later as he was waiting for a bus back home. He told us he was there to go over edits with the Dos Rios guys in their studio nearby, and asked us if we wanted to take a look. We said yeah, and got to see an early version about a minute later. I'm typically not much of a music video guy, but I really liked the way this one turned out.
