SD: We had a few days break before we flew back to the east coast for a couple festivals. The first one was at the South Street Seaport in New York for a one day fest called 4knots. It was at a sweet location on the piers of the East river surrounded by Manhattan skyscrapers and masts of the historic ship the Wavertree. I remember being stoked the festival had a vintage ampeg blueline svt for us to use and probably went a little overboard with the volume coming off a tour where I was using a small combo amp every night.

The show went great, and afterwards Will had an interview scheduled while I took the chance to catch Girlpool's set. Since at that point it was still fairly early I convinced Andrew to walk over to Chinatown with me so I could make a copy of his key. See at that point we only had one copy the outside key for our practice space. The landlord used a particular company for the locks that only licensed out their specific key mills to locksmiths with contracts with them. That way they could regulate how many copies of the keys were made, and people couldn't just go anywhere to make copies of their unique keys. After unsuccessfully trying to get a copy back home, I knew our best chance of getting another one would be in Chinatown haha.

So Andrew gave me his key and wandered around outside looking at fake Rolexes and handbags, while I walked into to a small locksmith/electronic shop with several specialized key mills. Sure enough they were happy to help me out as long as I paid cash and promised not report them for making unauthorized copies. It took about 20-30 minutes but after that we had an almost-perfect copy, and from that point on I wouldn't have to wait in the rain outside the practice space until Andrew showed up.

The next week we played the Pitchfork festival in Chicago. We got there pretty early to have a line-check before we played, and we ran into the band Twin Peaks backstage finishing rolling up what must have been hundreds of joints. They laughed and told us once they finished filling up the gallon-sized ziploc bag they were gonna throw them out into the crowd during their set. Unfortunately our set time was a little too early for the crowd for the crowd to be feeling those effects yet, but we played a pretty solid set and the early-comers seemed really into it. After our set we got to catch music from Moses Sumney and a bit of Carly Rae Jepsen as we were heading out. Later that night, Andrew's friend took us out to a famous deep-dish pizza joint because we had never tried any. It was worth experiencing, but I think all of us agreed the proportions made it a bit too heavy haha.
