Honestly, now that it's over, I was kind of disappointed by Suicide Squad Isekai at the end. Going into this show, my expectations were low, but I was willing to give it a chance. When the first 3 episodes left me feeling pleasantly surprised, I started to ignore the voice in my head saying, "This probably won't stick the landing," and I became optimistic about the show's potential. And when I learned that the writer is the guy behind Re:Zero and Vivy, my expectations grew even further.
Ironically, whereas the first 3 episodes gave me optimism, the last 3 episodes effectively killed that optimism. I'm not a fan of the troupe where previously unexplained lore suddenly appears out of nowhere near the end of a show, leaving the audience to be like, "Where did this come from? Was it hinted at earlier?" We knew something was wrong with the queen, but to learn that she was replaced by the "Undead King" person, someone we'd never heard of before, that wasn't a twist I liked. It could have worked, but reveals like this need groundwork, and that reveal didn't have much.
That being said, I'm glad the show's finale was open ended. Things would have been far worse if they'd tried to resolve every plot point in the final episode, which some shows do. Assuming we get a S2, which might not happen, I'm not sure how Suicide Squad Isekai can be salvaged, but I'm willing to give it a chance. I grew to love the characters, especially Clayface and Rick Flag, so that part was a success. As this was my first entry in the Suicide Squad franchise, if nothing else, they've at least inspired me to check out the franchise further.
