In the manga, when Toji took Megumi outside the narrator repeated “his fangs constantly bared at the strongest”, reaffirming that megumi was the strongest out of the group that fought Dagon. Jogo and Sukuna didn’t appear until after his fight with megumi began which is why he continued fighting megumi. He was trying his hardest though, the old ladies technique forced his body too, megumi was just in full escape mode and still hardly dodging

So when he was acknowledged by the king of curses as strong, he got a sense of worth
