Vivian Strange’s take on the film mentions this for sure. For me I felt like this was a really TERFy film if it weren’t for the token trans Barbie. Almost as if that’s why she was there, to be the defense against that criticism. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am cis, but that seemed gender essentializing to me? like, now barbie is a 'real woman' and so she has a vagina? It's the kind of thing that if I were writing it in my own work I'd get worried about it being interpreted as 'real woman' = vagina, but I'm curious about other people's interpretations.

I think it was a very enjoyable movie and visually stunning, funny, etc. Although it is a little level 1 feminist thinking, but at the same time I think that was purposeful for accessibility. At this point it’s hard to imagine people who haven’t thought critically about gender politics at least at this basic level, but hearing of all these people having a very personal fulfilling experiences at this movie does make me happy to hear. I’m glad it is what it is for the people who need it to be that. I also think it’s fun seeing all the groups of people, especially groups of women, coming together, dressing up, and going to see this movie together. There’s the consumeristic and capitalistic side of that but also… sometimes the girlies deserve to put on their cute outfits and have a good time together yknow?
