Growing up, I was so excited to see Yaoi and thought „wow, Japan is so progressive/open-minded.“ As I got older and actually had gay experiences, I realized, Yaoi has very little to do with gay men. Now Bara on the other hand… let’s just say, there is a noticeable difference. It might be difficult to talk on typical gay signifiers within a different broader cultural setting with its own associations and attitudes towards sex and gender.
