The PS5 No (The Jimquisition)

Sony's shareholders want more money, so it's time for a hardware update! The PS5 Pro has been announced. It costs a stupid amount of money and it's a stupid amount of worthless. Let's take a big wee-wee all over it, shall we?
i mean...for $700 the damn thing doesn't come with a stand or disc drive, both of which were included in the $500 base model so...those are kinda like content stripped out of a game to be resold as dlc.

and honestly, I don't really mind 30fps (outside of stuff like racing and fighting games) the problem is, when I put rebirth on graphics mode, it's not running a stable 30 fps, it's oscillating wildly between like...15 fps and 25 fps. So...given that choice, I'll happily stick with worse graphics and 60fps on most games.

it's rendering light beams basically, so you get much more realistic lighting. And, kind of like rendering hair individually (a previous thing nvidia crowed about in marketing wank) it uses a tremendous amount of computing power for something that barely matters at all.

One of these days, I will learn against my will what ray tracing is, what it does, and why anyone cares. Please, do not let today be that day.

the Disc Drive is not included. That's the paid DLC equivalent, or should I say, stripped content. The original PS5 has a disk drive. I don't know how sony fuck this up.

Whatโs the accessory thatโs being added onto?

I've been saying this same exact thing about ray tracing since NVidia's big fanfare with the 2000-series. Where they launched the hardware without a single implementation to actually test or illustrate it for over three months. So, how is ray tracing doing across all of gaming?
The 5000-series is rumored to be launching soon and to count the number of games where I can actually tell the difference that the ray tracing is there? If I exclude Quake 2 and the gimped version of Minecraft, I can count all of those on a single hand. And I don't even need all of the fingers.

You have to consider the legacy here. For several whole console generations 30 FPS has been marketed as smooth gameplay. Even if 75% of players (Sony's numbers from the presentation) play with 60 now that it's available, they cannot just do a 180. "You know what, 30 isn't actually good enough, like we told you, and many of you happily shouted at the PC crowd."
That, and the 30 FPS mode provides better screenshots, of course...

My wife just told me that the PS5 is going to be close to $1000 Canadian. That pretty much "buy a PC" territory in terms of money.

I held off on buying a PS5 for so long with the expectation that this would inevitably occur, and now that itโs here, I donโt think I want it ๐
