The Frustrating Contrast Between Concord's Failure & Astro Bot's Success (The Jimquisition)

Concord represents a new low for the "live service" goldrush, lasting only two weeks before Sony pulled the plug. Meanwhile, the same publisher just put out Astro Bot to joyful acclaim! One is a game nobody asked for, the other is a game people clamored for. Why do companies keep pumping their budgets into the former and neglecting the latter?

Because executives and investors are inherently stupid.

It's funny to witness the same thing going on for, by my count, 23 years (Gunbound, 2001), with the same mistakes over and over and over again. The weird part of the market is that it HAS had its niche-players-that-stick-around-a-while. City of Heroes had that status until NCSoft basically murdered Paragon Studio in the night for reasons technically still not known (and which, almost uniquely in the industry AFAIK, has been revived, WITH A LICENSE, by a nonprofit!); Club Penguin did it by the unusual method of... Not demanding maximum profit because it was made ground-up to be for kids, so a subscription and that was it. Concord, with a bit more advertising and a bit better launch, could've easily slotted in there, I think, in spite of its general mediocrity. Instead... PBBT. Also, the use of Neil Cicierega is appreciated.

I hope to see the day Live Services are dead, buried and the grave pissed on (by me).
