Samurai Warriors 5 - New Look, Old Garbage (Jimpressions)

Samurai Warriors 5 manages to disappoint me despite being part of an increasing franchise of letdowns. The Warriors series overall is in a total slump, has been for years, and yet I keep hoping for better.

Tecmo Koei went the "reboot" route with this one - a silly idea if you know your Warriors games - and it's been used as an excuse to cut yet more corners. Of course it has.

It's a bit of a hit and miss with me. I'm a sucker for the Musou franchise, though I'm glad I waited on DW 9 and didn't bother after seeing more of the game. I don't mind so much the problems you brought up, but I do admit they are problems. One thing that I actually enjoy is the fact that Nobunaga and Mitsuhide age, though I wish that were the case for everyone and not just them. Maybe they'll do that in the future and not just have everyone look the exact same age throughout the entire game.

"objective" interruptions are a deal breaker for me. i think it's pretty clear the developers have lost their passion for their main series' and need to stop and just do other IPs. Their hearts aren't in this anymore. Also, not a fan of pretty boy Obunaga. Preferred the evil vampire-like version.

I was really hoping a "reboot" would be an opportunity to revive old systems from the earlier games, back to basics and whatnot, but it just cut even more features. Instead of the officer training system from 1, they cut create-an-officer all together. SW1 (pre-XL) had 18 unique movesets. SW5 at release has 15. SW1 scaled difficulty to character levels so the game became more interesting as you unlocked more abilities. SW1 had unique indoor stages that changed the gameplay and pacing in a meaningful way. As a "reboot" it tells the same story, but it would have been better served as a reimagining of the first game than what we got.
