Biomutant - Attack Of The Goofy Weasel Beasts (Jimpressions)

I want to like Biomutant. I really do. But I don't. Because it's not very good.

I'm right up there with you Steph, I really wanted to like this game... but just the screenshots and gameplay footage looked so unappealing. Oh well.

Sergio Augusto

Great video once again, hope to see More Jimpressions... BTW are you gonna change it to Stephpressions or just leave it as Jim? BTW BTW Wik, I only asking, not saying you should or have to, just I was gonna write Stephpressions then had to check it was still Jim.

Munchman

Yeah, I was looking forward to it as some sort of platformy-roguelike-open-world elements and it just seems like that got all lost.

Crissa Kentavr

Aww, that's a shame. I was looking forward to this game since I tried it at a con a couple of years back. I vaguely remember the characters looking a lot better, and nothing like the cursed weasel gremlins they look like now. Listening to that narration for any extended amount of time sounds like torture -.-

Liz Jackson

Yup. I will never understand why giving someone with impaired hands an easy setting somehow devalues other people’s experience. I mean of course in single player...not multi. I would absolutely love to play those hard games, but the devs have basically told me that my money is no good here. In any event, Steph is entitled to their opinion. I like the game, but not everyone thinks it’s charming. Someone in a youtube comment referred to this as the Marmite of games. People love it or they hate it. I love it.

Mary Jo DiBella

My apologies. I should have said "absolutely should play". I edited previous comment. I didn't want to make it seem like your opinion of the game isn't valid. Of you like it, awesome! Have fun. It us just specifically targeting your statement that Steph likes dark and gritty games, which to me implies that they will review them more favorably. I simply don't see it. There are lots of games they reviewed very positively that are buoyant, joyful, happy, and bright. There are loads of games they reviewed that are super dark. I have long lamented that hard games don't have an easy mode. I think it makes them inaccessible and I think games should be able to be enjoyed by everyone. It's that dame garbage argument that whatever you do in your personal life that has no effect on me will deeply affect me. The same argument was used against gay marriage, interracial marriage, drug use, addiction treatment, Healthcare needs, family planning services and more. It is just thr same logic applied to games.

Me? I don’t play Yakuza. One reason I mentioned my age is because my hands aren’t quite as adept as they used to be. Biomutant has ‘easy’ mode, which is the factor that has always kept me far away from souls-type games. But different strokes for different folks. I get what JimSteph is saying about the character models but the ones they pointed out are meant to look creepy. This game has an interesting (I think) moral question...you have to choose between one tribe that believes in ‘just kill them all and start over’...or the other tribe thar believes ‘we will save the world and kill anyone who disagrees’. I am not keen on genocide but I also really dislike evangelists. And it does, indeed, make a difference which side you choose.

I don't think you are right with the grit factor. Check our their review for Lapis X Laberinth. It is a game where you run around and collect jewels as chibi characters. Steph loved it. From their reviews I have seen, it doesn't seem to matter how gritty or violent the game is so much as how good and fun it is. They hate FIFA because it us a money pit of gambling targeted to kids, not because it's about soccer. They hated the tom Clancy games because they were loot box distrubution machined wrapped in complications, gritty though it might be. I saw the stream and it just looked like every idea they had was better done in other games and enemies took too long to bring down. None of the plot looked particularly relevant or relatable to player action, the crafting was half baked, the puzzles were too simple, and invisible walls made getting stuck easy. It looked like a direct rip from breath of the wild only everything in it was worse... leading you to just play more of the better game. It reminded me a lot of KoA, only everything was just missing the last 25% to bring it all home. KoA was given mediocre reviews at best because it implemented everything from other games in a decent (but not spectacular) way and was enjoyable but not incredible. This wasn't even KoA. I gently push back a bit because I have followed steph for years now and the reason I trust their reviews is precisely because they focus on gameplay elements being fun outside of setting. I can get exposed to games that might not be anything like what I would normally like if the gameplay elements are there. Like Yakuza, which you absolutely shpuld play. Gritty? I dunno. Probably but you also run a hostess club and go on blind dates with a phone sex mini game that is out of this world.

Benedict Holland

Tastes vary. I know that you like games to be harder and ‘grittier’ than I do. For context, I am a 71 year old woman. I love games but I don’t take them as seriously as you do...nothing wrong with that, of course, this is your livelihood. But with all its faults (and yes, there are faults, just not gamebreakers...IMO) this is fun. And I love supporting a company that doesn’t treat its employees as consumables.

Mary Jo DiBella

Okay. I am glad you're enjoying it.

Jim Sterling

That's disappointing. I've been waiting and watching this game, albeit not too closely, since I saw a trailer for it a year or two ago. I'll probably wait for a sale.

JoMiMu

I disagree. Strongly. This game is great, it’s fun,and it was built by a small team in a company that did not mandate ‘crunch’. I love playing a fun game without needing to wonder how many of the dev staff ended up in the hospital before the game was released and the company laid them off. This game was/is a labor of love, and it shows. Yes, there are a few bugs, but there is already a patch and the dev team is accessible and responsive on discord. Yes, Jim, the game is silly. That’s intentional.
