The Videogame Retailers That Would Rather Kill Than Die (The Jimquisition)

GameStop has finally closed its doors during the recent health crisis, despite remaining adamant it would continue to expose its workers and customers to risk.

It's among several videogame retailers that have fought to stay open and ignore sensible quarantine advice. Their staff have been frustrated and scared, but the CEOs don't care. The CEOs aren't the ones expected to handle used games without hand sanitizer.

EB Games, GameXChange, CEX, and GAME UK have been doing the same, flying under the radar as GameStop took all the heat. They're all as bad as each other.

These are companies so desperate to stay in business, they'd risk causing sickness and even death to keep the doors open.

Now I still prefer to buy games boxed, mostly due to preorders as whatever game I am interested in checking out I can just pay in chunks and not the full thing. (Something the rest of the industry should think about) but I honestly am not fimular with Gamestop. Mostly because I'm an Australian. We have EB Games. Simple as that.

Nice. Not that they do this.... that someone's calling them out on it. About time!

Absolutely fucking typical of GameStop, GAME and EB, to be fair - they've always been that bad, if you got to see anything at managerial or area manager level, even 20-odd years ago. All about the pound sterling of flesh, to head office. Also, bonus points for the seriously appropriate Three Days Grace track right at the end, there, Jim. ;)

I love how you seize any opportunity to use games to spread socialism. Right on! Keep fighting the good fight

Pretty sure the lockdown will now force them to close.

This is happening to GAME in the UK. They announced today that they are closing the shitty esports arenas that nobody goes to but retail stores are staying open. An extra slap in the face is that over 30 GAME stores could be closed at any fucking point as they we're given notice earlier this year that their jobs are fucked if they can't get a better deal on rents. It was a shitty company to work for when I was there two years ago and now they expect people to potentially PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR MINIMUM WAGE AND NO GUARANTEE THEIR STORES WONT CLOSE.

Always appreciate your anti-capitalist rants, keep them coming. This particular thing shows that trying to stop people dying has no effect on the push for profits - and pushing them to show how callous that is.

I was very happy to see that Pennsylvania revoked GameStop's business license to force them to close. Sad it even came close to that. But like you said, these executives aren't in this with us. They are beyond the reach of this virus and the problems it brings. Another great video Jim. You and Justin continue to stay as safe as you can.

Because of all the disruption caused to your respective projects I think now would be a good time to send Ian your VR set in a show of solidarity.

I say we lump nonessential businesses that insist on staying open during a heath crisis in with all of the parents who refuse to vaccinate their kids, and start calling them Bioterrorists.
