Let's Get Pissy About In-Game Subscriptions (The Jimquisition)

Subscriptions for games are not new, but in the era of the "live service" they look set to make a major comeback. With television, music, and physical goods all offering subscriptions, companies want an endlessly drip-fed stream of cash.

The idea of in-game subscriptions that offer premium extras may very well become the new microtransactions - on top all the existing monetization techniques - and services like Fallout 1st or the Animal Crossing "Happy Helper" plan offer a glimpse at that potential future.

It's not a great future, so I'm going to be pissy about it.

Malbeth

awesome bethetic dance :)

Jim, your little dance party literally saved my day from being 100% crap and put a smile on my face. Thank you SO much!

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I show up for Jim being weirdly British and stay for the thoughtful arguments.

Please put up a clip of just the dancing to that music, that made my day.

On that bit about nintendo, and mobile games being a glimpse of the next generation - next generation is streaming. Pay for the game, Subscribe to the platform to play the game,Subscribe within the game to be able to play it at its fullest. It's just going to be subscriptions all the way down.

I loooove that Bethesda segment intro! Amazing!

Yeah anyone that thinks Nintendo won't pull this crap in their console games is naive. Oh and there's another awful business model from Bethesda we could be getting more of-forcing you to buy MTXs to get access to premium DLC, cause RAGE 2 pulled that with it's latest expansion, which you cannot buy from PSN, XBL or Steam, oh no you have to buy it from the in-game marketplace and you have to do it with the games premium currency, so the game is basically holding DLC hostage until you buy MTXs and Bethesda are no doubt hoping once you get enough RAGE coins to get the expansion(and of course there's coins left over after buying the expansion to tempt you into buying more stuff, and BTW the cheapest option to get the expansion requires you buying two different amounts of currency)that you'll get into the sunk cost fallacy and buy more coins to spend on more cosmetic stuff, that's beyond shitty.

Also I love 9:51 so much

Easily one of your best episodes yet

I still say "Happy Helper Plan" sounds like the frequent-customer card at the local Asian massage parlor.
