Medievil - It's The Nineties! (Jimpressions)

Medievil's PS4 release is a remarkably faithful recreation of the 1998 classic, and that's a problem. While the remaster is a near-perfect recreation, it recreates something archaic that, even at the time, was rather clunky.

Unfortunately, MediEvil needed a full overhaul or, better yet, a brand new game. An authentic recreation of an old and messy game isn't what the series should settle for.

Video Games can be like Music. Music can be like Memories. There is Music i just don't want to hear. And so i don't want to play Medievil again, however good it may be. You're not alone, Jim. <3

Honestly, I suspected the gameplay and controls might be "retro", but the filter on my rose-tinted glasses may be too strong for me to care. I'm probably going to buy this. The siren's call of nostalgia beckons me.

The original was deeply popular in Australia. I'm not sure why it was never expanded upon either. Perhaps times changed and military shooters became the norm

At least it may have revived interest! And the devs were smart enough to know they couldn't improve on a fan favorite. Now that the nostalgia goggles have slipped some, maybe they can get away with a fresh entry!

Minit was also successful in capturing the essence of what made some games great in the 1980s, without being a 1980s game.

I'm sorry to hear your disappointment Jim. I know you were excited about this game when it was reveal and how much you mention it when I first discovered your channel. It seems like the developers, Other Ocean Emeryville, made the same mistake Playtonic Games did with Yooka-Laylee by making a 90s game with a nice coat of paint. We all know how much you despise that game.

There are some old games I would love to have a remake, another entry, or spiritual successor to but any developers pursuing that have to make sure to capture the essence without the archaic baggage. It is why I adore the Resident Evil 2 Remake. It captured the beats of the original but Capcom succeeded by doing a different job. Shovel Knight is also lauded for taking the best qualities of an NES game without being one because most NES games have aged poorly.

That's unfortunate, I never got around to this in the mists of the past so I was thinking about taking a look now. Oh well. What surprises me is that no one took this and made a Goof Souls. It's a genre that could do with some fucking whimsy and humour.

That's such a shame, the game has so much charme and potential that even just solid game mechanics would have been enough to make it fantastic. Regarding popularity, I think the first one was pretty successful, but the sequels weren't received well, so interest in the series just steadily declined.
