Asking Sterling Questions Post!

It's time for that thing where you do an asking of a question so I can answer it on an Asking Sterling podcast! Sorry it's been a while since we did one of these, I've been ridiculously busy with our video content lately, especially Jimpressions stuff and working on the new aesthetic of the show (I'll have a separate post about that in the near future).

Ask away, my lovely patrons, and I shall answer you with words from my mouth that you'll be allowed to hear!

Comments

Remember Artifact? At the time of writing (although probably not the time of answering), it's less than a year old.

CarbonGeass497

So I don't know if there's still time to ask, I deleted my last question because I just couldn't think how to word it, until I saw the Bethesda subscription video. With how loot boxes seem to be on the way out, how things like Ghost Recon Break Bank just sell a storefront, but then things like Call of Duty switching to a battle pass, do you think the game industry is going to improve its monetization to not bastardize the game? I know they're never going to not try to milk the customer and exploit them, but do you think they'll at least find a less terrible method? Maybe a middle ground where you can actually buy a game and not worry how they're going to try to suck you dry.

Have you played Felix the Reaper? Saw it the other day on the eshop, and it looked fabulously delightful. The launch trailer alone is worth a watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56ID1_DMWR8

Soupkitten

Do you think it is ethical to buy borderlands 3?

Benedict Holland

How did you meet Gavin and Laura?

On your Ghost Recon video you were drinking. I was wandering: what is your alcohol of choice?

Any animated shows/movies you recommend? Off the cuff, old or new, anything obscure or just plain weird? And how about respelling Jon’s name? Would that help the “issue”? Something like: Homes, Hohms, or Hoams? I feel bad if that were the thing that ruined his comeback.

Hi Jim! I just became a patron after listening to you for a few months now and think you are doing an incredible job with highlighting the issues in the gaming industry. Your Dark Souls video had such an impact on me that I finally gave the series a shot and absolutely love it and its lore! So thank you for that! My question is with souls-like games becoming more of a thing, do you think any licensed properties could be adapted into a souls-like game? I liked the anime style in Code Vein and thought that the anime Bleach or One Piece would be fun to adapt into a souls-like gaming experience. Thank you again for speaking truth in a industry flooded with lies and deceit.

Where do you find the questions podcast?

What do you think it will take to kill microtransactions?

Benedict Holland

Hope I’m not too late to squeeze this one in. In PQ 251 you guys were taking with Conrad about Risk of Rain 2 and roguelikes. Have either of you tried Everspace? Imagine if FTL and elite dangerous had a baby and that baby did cocaine. It can be a little repetitive, but I love the gameplay loop. The way Conrad spoke of RoR, I think he’d really like it.

Have you played The Messenger? It's one of those retro-styled Metroidvanias, so I think you'd like it. If you haven't, could you please just talk a bit about Bartleby?

I thought i'd talk about our good friend Reggie fils aime, you once mention about the Resident evil 4 merchant and why capcomhas not brought his back I think the reason is reggie fils aime bought the rights. You might be asking why he bought the right's, it so he can go to con's and dress as the merchant selling amiibo. Their is no amiibo manufacturing problem it's just Reggie fils aime intercepting packets so he can sell it as the merchant after all every one knows Reggie fils aime is notorious for stealing packets. You might be wondering what Reggie fils aime would want with all that money , i'll tell you next month. On a side note when David Cameron fucked a pig you reviewed a game on itchio.com. Iron snout , I'd thought i'd let you know it's out on the switch.

Any opinion on Pewdiepie's antics? (I suspect he's a Skeksi) Also, as Black Books series 2&3 have little to do with Graham Linehan, him having been kicked to the curb by Dylan Moran after season 1, does that render them more palatable?

Levethian7

Do you drink only the finest of drinks?

Shapie Starberrie

Hail, Sterling! What do you like to do in your free time/to relax besides video games and wrestling? Cheers and keep up the good work!

With The Dark Crystal prequel out on netflix and you being a fan of it, I was curious if you were familiar with another show that made a lot of use of Jim Henson puppets Farscape? If you don't know of it it was a sci-fi show in the early 00's that used Jim Henson puppets for a lot of it aliens, and was THE GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME(I will fight you) It also co-stared Claudia Black aka that actor who voices every female character with black hair in video games.

Derek Nagy

Hey Jim, would you make a video for your patrons/viewers of you just playing Metal Arms for April fools? Or, just anytime really. I like metal arms. It's funny.

Moose

I think CoD’s match making system is INTEGRAL to their scummy patent. You lose via match-making, buy then get put into a winning round via match-maker. I’m sure the console cross platform is to increase their pool. What do you think of my hypothesis?

Alfrecht das Liebe

I've always wondered what inspired you to create the Jimquisition in the first place. What it was about gaming that made you so passionate about it.

Hey Jim, quick and simple for you. Did you ever get that PO Box set back up for us to send you art, dildos, and obscenities? Love the new colour scheme, love your work, and happy to always be a supporter.

So in reply to your previous response. I'm sorry to hear that the undertale fan animation made you uncomfortable, apparently some of the artists weren't even aware of the graphic ending. That said, that cameo I mentioned last time is completely SFW and only has like 1 line. I tried emailing you after your response, but I received no reply. I'll email you again with contact details the moment your first response podcast is up for the month(since mine's so far back anyway), thanks

Jim, how did you find Jake Gyllenhaal 's portrayal of mysterio? Jim, have you watch any ultraman shows? I just realised they are basically man in spandex wrestling. You think that years of seeing them do grapple/suplex/drop kick would have key me in earlier, but oh well.

Hey Jim, why no love for Monster Hunter? Capcom have truly outdone themselves with this one. Anyhow, fuck EA, fuck Bethesda, fuck Actiblizz and all lootboxes in AAA games with full price tag (actually, fuck lootboxes in general), oh... and fuck Konami for good measure. And thank God for you! :)

I feel like you might cover this anyway but are you as galled as I am at Gearbox’s response to it coming out that Troy Baker wasn’t in Borderlands 3 because it was non-Union where they said “We are glad his career took off after he worked with us”? (Referencing him being in Brothers in Arms)

CS Drennan

Hey Jim, not a question, an apology for nagging you on Twitter about E.M. like a sick sycophant puppy, after your JQ on GTA Casino. A total of three wires got crossed in my brain at that time, as my internal investigation has revealed. That shit was out of line. I have legit questions lined up, but for now only an apology, such is my humble penance(not influenced by Blasphemous at all :D), sorry and thank God for you 'o' .o. P.S.: loved the "casino walkthroughs"!

Hey jim, Is it only a matter of time before indie developers begin adding micro transactions, season passes, loot boxes and all the rest to their games or is there something fundamentally different about the indie scene that will prevent this?

Favourite Kirby ability?

CarbonGeass497

Hi Jim! When you redesigned The Jimquisition website, it pretty much got rid of the archive of your reviews. Do you still have them? Is there somewhere we can access them still? I've wanted to go back and look at some of them, but don't know how. Thanks!

Joseph La Russa

What do you think of the Skaven from Warhammer Fantasy? I feel like you'd totally be in love with things like the Hell Pit Abomination and the DOOMWHEEL.

As a Saw fan, what order would you list them in from worst to best? Bonus did you find out about Repo! The Genetic Opera because of Darren Lynn Bousman (director of Saw II - IV)?

Morgan LeFay Dethen

How much have you enjoyed playing The Surge 2 after your Jimpressions video, I just got through to CIT and gideons rock, so halfway I think? Wondering if, like me, you had issues with getting around the levels later in the game, by that I mean the shortcuts and passageways. It can be a little bit of a maze sometime. : )

KorenSolust

What game released in the last few years do you think a young Jim Sterling, just getting into gaming, would have enjoyed the most?

Beech Horn

If there were one lesson you think would be most important for Souls-like game designers to have hammered home, what would it be?

Trevor Bond

Just had a great time watching Repo and wondered what other shows you think deserve more love? Are you and Laura aware of a new one called Six (essentially "What if the six wives of Henry VIII were a girl band?")?

RainSnail

Hi Jim, With Conrad joining podquisition, are you at all worried that the sexual tension on the show will become so overwhelming as to make the show inappropriate to listen to in public as the will-they-wont-they between you and Laura is combined with the will-they-wont-they between you and Conrad. Also I suppose I should thank you. I made my girlfriend listen to the spin-off doctors: street fighter the animated movie and at your and Conrad's insistence that no one would ever wiggle their butt in the shower like Chun-lee she has now done so every day for several months. So thanks for that.

Sayucchi

No more boglin watch? Also I've been rewatching the fuck pile lately and I miss it

You said a couple of times that even though Mysterio wasn't done the way you would have liked in Far From Home, you still enjoyed what they did with him. So I'm wondering, what do you think would have been the perfect way to use him in a movie?

Ben L.

What do you think will happen when loot boxes are legally considered gambling and require an 18+ rating? Do you think the video game industry will learn from this and just make games and sell games (doubtful). Or do you think they'll go back to selling parts of games to us with on disc DLC? Or maybe something new and worse.

RR

Hey Jim, are there any turns-of-phrase/expressions you’ve picked up from video games that now habits of your own speech? For a personal example I can’t say “fantastic” without adding the inflection Frank West has in Dead Rising 1, and I’ve got too many stock phrases from TWEWY memorised to count. Also, and this is just an anecdote not a question feel free to skim read it, but I recently found out that the Seaman creatures from the Dreamcast game of the same name have the same voice actor as York from Deadly Premonition. Don’t know if you have any experience with Seaman but check out their lines on youtube and you’ll totally hear York’s strange sarcastic tone in their delivery.

With Gavin now leaving the podcast and the new look of the Jimquisition brand, are you anticipating/planning changes in any other areas (ie, the rule of threes)?

Tinwhisker

Hi Jim, what is your opinion on the upcoming Yakuza 7 game and its gameplay? Are you warming up towards their change towards an RPG style game (similar to turn-based RPGs like Fire Emblem) rather than the beat em' up gameplay that they're used to doing?

With a bunch of ports coming out on the switch to this day, some of which being games that have been hugely updated since their first release, does "you only get one release" need the addendum of "unless you release on the switch later" or something similar?

Jay Ellis-James

If for whatever reason you had to walk away from what you're doing now, what other form of employment do you think you could do that you would find moderately pleasing?

Kaine

What brought you to Mississippi? I think thats where you mentioned you were living now. Seems far from the gaming industry. Thank God for you!

Super Sugar

Have you or Conrad considered the movie, Gamer, starring Gerard Butler, for your movie boys podcast?

44KPanda

Have you come across or read 'The Dictator's Handbook'? If so I'd be curious to hear your thoughts. If not then it has a take on the mechanisms of both political and corporate power structures that you might find interesting.

What's your favorite version of Megalovania, of the four versions Toby Fox has composed? (Those being the original, Homestuck, Undertale, and Smash Ultimate as far as I'm aware.)

Melco Driggs

Under Focus Home Interactive situation due to chaining, contract details how likely is it that they could get sent to court over breach of contract since I doubt that contract details subject to change is part of any marketing deal... Plus how ya holding up ya big Chungus ...

A while ago you talked about liking the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks. Did you also read the great Grailquest series of gamebooks?

Ian Wright

When the age of cAAApatilism ends, what comes next?

If you could make your own tv game show, what would you make it about? Cheeky optional inappropriate question: Whats your favourite type of knob?

ChrisLion

As a horror aficionado, have you seen the movie Cannibal Holocaust? If so, do you like the film?

Gage

Do you find that your taste in games is narrowing as you get older? Maybe it's just having kids but so many genres now do nothing for me that I have previously loved, platformers, open world games etc...

Neil Williamson

could you please use your skelator voice to call boris johnson a massive boob?

zosa

Can I have a hug?

A guy like me can't help but wonder, what word, common or made-up, is amusing you today? Mine is anusplosion. It just brings to mind such vivid imagery, like, "Todd Howard survived the anusplosion with surprisingly few injuries, but his carpets would never be the same."

Thomas Halpin

What is the average air speed of an unladen swallow?

Have you ever read any of the Red Dwarf books? And if it hasn't already been asked, whats your favorite RD episode?

Hi Jim. Of the top of your head, what was the most recent game you've played that you loved and seemingly everyone else hated?

Sam J. (chrlorez)

Why do you think NBA2K20 is so flagrant about it being a lootbox/gambling laden clusterfuck, but Borderlands 3 -despite being a perfect medium for the same- somehow avoids even indulging in microtransactions?

Nagatsu Seiken

When you first started the Jimquisition what was your biggest hurdle, and what inspired you to start the Jimquisition?

Exactly how good did feel to have the UK Commission validate everything you've been saying about lootboxes for ages? Better than orgasm given to you by a baseball bat dildo?

Theo Caro

I've been playing quite a bit of Battlefield V recently (it's not very good but I can enjoy it at times) and have been thinking about how this game has no USPs, especially compared to the 'levelutions' from BF4/Hardline. This made me consider a question that I'd appreciate (and thank God for) your input on: should a videogame sequel build upon every aspect of a previous instalment, or intentionally leave something out so that said instalment can avoid becoming obsolete?

Gavin Ironside

Do you have a favourite Best Of The Worst episode?

Twit In A Hat

What's your opinion of Google Stadia? As someone who may have a job next week (I had an interview yesterday) I've been wondering whether I should save up for a Cyberpunk-2077-Max-Settings build or just a 4K monitor or TV. And have you seen that portrait someone made of you in MS Paint on your subreddit?

Jono Charles Davey

I can’t believe my life has come to this, but how did you watch Postal for Spin-Off Doctors? I was watching it on Amazon Prime, and noticed that a number of things were cut from that version. It was really noticeable in the scene in the coffee shop where it skipped the majority of the interaction between the guy and the barista. It also skipped the cultist talking to the Taliban member. Considering how you kept talking about how tight the plot was, it bugged me that I wasn’t seeing those scenes. It only took listening to the Postal podcast three or four times to get around to watching it...

As someone with no desire to have children, what are your reasons for not wanting children?

noxamillion

Given the on going three ring shit show that is Fallout 76 and the co-op micro transactions that where in Wolfenstein: Youngblood. How worried should we be about Bethesda and Doom Eternal.

First off, I love everything you do! Thank you for providing great content! Have you tried Immortal Unchained? It's a souls-like, single player, third person shooter. It's quite good and I think you would like it.

Start with the praise, new style for the main show is good - well done Justin and all that. However question(s) - Has there ever been an opening Skit that you wanted to do for the show but when you started looking into it just proved too costly/difficult to pull off and you had to give up on? - Are you a fan of the diskworld series and if so which book would you recommend to start with for someone that hasn't read them? - any chance the Movie Boys get round to the Re:Boot TV series? love to hear your thoughts after a rewatch

Over the years you've taken a lot of publishers to task over their questionable decisions, but I'm curious as to which publishers you would say are the best, or at least the ones which seem to be the most pro-consumer and anti-crunch.

As you may well know, the Big Beat Manifesto goes "Big Beats are the best, Get high all the time". Jim, how would your manifesto go?

The Irony Giant

Are you ever going to do more video game porn reviews?

With google's controversial push into the game market with Google stadia, given the lack luster customer service decisions revealed so far prior to launch, what do you think and ideal pro-consumer streaming service for video games would/should look like while still being a bussniess model that could make a profit for the company that would implement this theoretical system?

I think the only way I can get through Deadly Premonition is by watching a let's play. Any chance you could do one and umm... Finish it this time?

Boss Fascist Smasha

Could you make a video showing the jimquisition set?

Beeray Echo

You mentioned dunkeys sekiro video in a podcast and it got me thinking. What other youtubers do you follow on a regular basis? And do you have any favourites?

Sprinkles, yes or no?

John S. Fetzik

If you were the CEO of Konami for a week, what changes would you implement? Or would you rather dismantle the entire company from the inside?

With AAA companies requiring more money every fiscal quarter to satisfy their investors, how can ones such as 2K Games and Activision reverse their greed-fueled microtransaction practices and still survive? I feel that they are walking an unsustainable path that will only hurt them in the end.

Hello Jim, how much does a publisher’s or a developer’s bad reputation affect your enjoyment of a game?

I recommended The Sexy Brutale to my mother (who rarely plays games outside of a few puzzlers), and she absolutely fell in love with it. She even went so far as to collect every card hidden in the game, a feat even I wasn't able to do. Do you have any other games you'd give a similar recommendation to for people that don't usually play games?

OnyxAlchemyst

Hi Jim! I hope you don’t mind this is a recommendation and not a question, but I wanted to recommend an underrated videogame movie, and maybe something to consider for a future Spin-Off Doctor’s podcast. The movie in question is ‘Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva’, and it’s an animated adaptation of the Professor Layton franchise by Level-5 (a series of puzzle/detective games with over-the-top yet endearing narratives on the DS and 3DS). I think it’s amongst one of the rare objectively good videogame movies out there, because not only is it a faithful adaptation of the games and its universe in a fully-fledged movie, but it’s also a videogame movie that doesn’t cater just towards veteran fans of the franchise, and stands as its own competent film for anyone who didn’t play the Layton games prior. P.S.: Love the Surprise Mechanic, and thanks for the fun times brought by the Podquisitions! Best wishes for the future!

Favorite Beer brands/Wines (brands/types)?

Hey Jim! Not a question, more a reccomendation, but if you ever wanted to see the effects crunch had on the Fallout New Vegas team, a youtuber named TriangleCity has a documentary series about its development called Fallout New Vegas the Cutting Room Floor, where he interviewed the Obsidian staff. In addition to some devs swearing to quit any job that required crunch hours after the game was finished, apparently a ton of work had to be removed because the team didnt have to time to finish it, so a lot of effort just went to waste because Bethesda didnt give enough time.

With Hallowe'en coming up soon and your love of Sinking City here's a few shitty-but-great Lovecraft movies that are worth a watch: Necronomicon (1993 - anthology), Dagon (2001 - actually very good), Pulse Pounders (1988 - another anthology with Jeffrey Combs), Lurking Fear (1994). Any you can recommend?

Hi Jim! You've mentioned before that you're a fan of Joe Abercrombie's books. Who is your favorite character from the First Law world?

Tino Galizio

Are you concerned as I am about youtube channels (whatculture, Inside Gaming, Wrestle Talk etc) taking paid promotion money and giving the hard sell on freemium games including pimping out the bullshit currencies. I have lost massive respect for channels I enjoyed. That and did you play Catherine? either back in the day or the Full Body remaster?

Hey Jim, I know you're not a strategy game person but is there something that would make you try one anyway ? Strong theme/accessibility/humor etc....

Snapping Snapper

Hello Jim What is best new album you have heard this year?

Hey Jim I wanted to ask if you do a deepdive into your opinion of saw. You said before you'd like to do it and I would love to see it. Make a spin off of the spin off doctors and get to monitize the truma you got from watch Puppet master or head of the family.

Ryan Casey

Are we going to see more videos along the lines of "The political agenda of Dark Souls"? It's probably my favourite Jimquisition episode so far, and it seems like the Souls series has plenty more material to work with. :)

Hello Jim, your Videos this year have been stellar and you are putting out so much great work it is staggering. But in the last, or second to last, questions episode you talked about the Ooblets Situation and some stories being too toxic to touch. Because of that I thought about this question: Is there any Jimquistion, or other video, you regret doing? Be it because you changed your opinion later on, the reactions been quite different then expected or any other reason?

ChristopherMino

Hello Jim, long time listener here. What advice would you give to promising VR developers/companies regarding making their products more mainstream; the biggest problem at the moment is obviously the price but are there any other things that could be improved? Thank you!

No question this time. Just a thank you for the constant content to keep me ears and eyes occupied. Also just want to throw Virtuosity out there for Spin-off doctors, and even though it’s not related to gaming, I think the community would love to hear your and Conrad’s commentary on The Room.

Hey Jim, I hope you are doing well, both mentally and physically. We know Starscream is your favourite Decepticon, but who is your favourite Autobots that isn't Optimus Prime?

Are the wrestling matches you did available to watch? Where can I see them?

Simon Renshaw

You never promote your patreon in your YouTube videos, what's that about? There are probably a lot of people who would want to support you, but don't know about it.

I was listening to a GamesIndustry.Biz podcast on loot box legislation and it suprised me how they criticized Overwatch's tactics of obfuscating how much you pay and what you even buy. Do you think that other companies going even further has made people re-think their stances on games they previously defended?

Hi Jim. I'm a rather silent patron, but wanted to chip in. I know you use a lot of 80s/90s kids TV show stills in your videos, including quite niche ones like the Telebugs. My question, what are your top five 80s/90s kids shows?

Did you manage to complete the original Grandia eventually? I know you said you wanted to do it this time. If you did, what were your final thoughts?

Would you be cool if someone made a custom wrestling figure of your Sterdust persona? I make (though still very much a noob at it) custom figures and I was wondering if you would enjoy someone making a figure of Sterdust to have on display or put on your podium

fenris2587

Hello Jim! I have a VERY important question that's been on my mind and I've never heard your personal opinion on it. Who is best boy: Goro Majima or Kazuma Kiryu? Keep up the awesome work, love you! ♡

VenatorJo

Hey Jim, I like the new logo! What are some handheld games that didn't get the attention or love they deserved?

The Memory Card

Can we get you and Conrad to do a Spin-off doctors of the Banana splits movie? You guys deserve a distraction on occasion.
