Football Jock Games vs. Drama Nerd Games (The Jimquisition)

Some games get all of daddy's love, and some simply don't. There's a clear hierarchy of games in the "AAA" industry, with some getting more publisher support than others.

As BioWare continues to flounder in this rut of an industry, it's time to look at which studios are the drama nerds and which are the football jocks. Because this is a football town, not a place where drama gets the resources.

Also, The Faculty.

I think part of their "logic" is instead of spending some money on an RPG you should be spending lots of money on a sports game.

Don't know if you've seen this. Strauss Zelnick being interviewed by Gary V. The highlights Strauss: "I knew I wanted to run a movie studio when i was five."...Evasive answer...Evasive answer... "I think it was more about the money. (laughter) Little did I know there were better ways to make money. (more laughter) That's like Harvey Weinstein saying the movie business is a nice way to meet girls. : | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqEjME5RiNg#action=share

Why invest SO MUCH into something like a sports game that's going to crap out money no matter what you do? Ugh. Someday the drama geeks are just going to walk away and people are going to realize being a football town is boring 90% of the year... But hey, Shrouded Isles looks awesome!

My suspicion is that it's a lot of buzzword-heavy high-concept phrases that impress investors- "Our acquisition of PopCap games aggressively prioritizes the burgeoning growth in the 'casual' game market!"... Investors who frequently don't bother to check back and see how the actual actions behind those positive, "taking the initiative"-style phrases actually pan out.

It's kind of not my business how someone chooses to spend their entertainment dollar. Yet at the same time, I walk into someplace like Target and see rows of cards for buying STUFF inside of games like FIFA and Madden, cards with face values as high as many games cost in and of themselves, and it's hard not to go, "Could you please stop FEEDING this crass behavior, guys?"

What is the business logic behind EA's acquire-and-kill MO? To my untrained eye, it looks like really inefficient asset-stripping.

Grate video Jim And pls keep doing the indie highlights at the end, I love them

Pedro Garcia-Huidobro

Jim great idea plugging good indie games in ur critical vids. Brilliant! I just got my husband to buy Shrouded Isle because of this vid

But, Jim, all the trolls on /r/games who drop in to say "EA BAD" when anybody calls out EA on their bullshit told me that Anthem is 100% BioWare's fault and EA is pure and blameless.

That "smuggled in" +ve indie game mention was quite nice, I'd be happy to see more of that in jimquisitions. Its nice to end on a positive note.
