Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - I Don't Like Sekiro And That's Okay! (Jimpressions)

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is surrounded by buzz, and with good reason. It's a From Software instant classic, a game of stealth, brutal combat, and punishing difficulty.

I also don't like it.

For those of you who haven't mashed the dislike button or flown into an angry comment rage from this video's title alone, sit back and listen as I explain how Sekiro is a very good game that's absolutely not for me.

While not hugely sophisticated, there are variants of enemy ai which respond differently to seeing player, enemy patrol paths and other stealth puzzles. I wouldn't call it ground breaking in the stealth genre, but it's been engaging for me so far. In the video, Jim has picked a route which enables him to avoid being seen, but most other paths have overlapping observers.

Does the parrying really work in this game? In many games it does not. Also in the video it really looked like the AI was awful and I saw basically enemies just standing in place and not patrolling areas. Is it like that throughout the game? There should be moments where you have to avoid two enemies being in the same area and spotting you.

Sekiro takes this still further, making all of the techniques necessary. This avoid players getting into ruts but is not flexible in the way dark souls was. [For the record, I'm a huge fan of all 3]

To me it's a really interesting design progression. Dark Souls 1 had a lot of flexibility, but many players gravitated towards shields as the answer to all questions, eg a degenerative strategy. Bloodborne was addressed this by removing shields and redesigning more heavily around dodges, pain-states and parrys. However, some players still didnt use the parry mechanic, opting to use dodging exclusively. This was more dynamic than shields as you can dodge in different directions, so it is debatable whether this constituted a degenerative strategy.

When it comes to reviews, I generally don't mind much if the reviewer liked or dislike a game; what I really want to know is *why* they liked or disliked a game.

i might give it as chance but i have a feeling that i will end up note liking it too, for the same reasons :/

I'm not one of those who finds "punishing" to be a plus. I want games I can enjoy playing, meaning low difficulty settings and even more importantly quicksave. Both optional of course. With quicksave I can enjoy even a fundamentally difficult game, which is great.

I have not watched the video yet, but based on the streams i've watched so far, i know it's no game for me (i suck at sneaking) but i like watching people playing it.
