Podquisition 216: Trans Rights

On this week's episode, we talk about Hbomberguy's historic Donkey Kong 64 stream for trans charity Mermaids.

Also, Resident Evil 2, and some other things!

Podquisition 216: Trans Rights

Comments

I have seen all the episodes of the IT Crowd and I can't remember one that was particularly sexist - I mean, there are sexist characters in it, but whatever. I checked his twitter after reading your comment, and yeah, he seems to be revelling in the toxicity of it all, so he can get to fuck.

This is maybe the first stream ever which almost made me cry, I watched it almost the whole weekend.. I do somewhat keep track of nazis, "anti sjw's", , etc. online and it was an extremely welcome to not see all the general positivity and no bastards brigading the DK stream.

Sadly this does not really seem to be the case, if you read Graham tweets from the last week or so you will see twisting "facts" around as much as possible to make mermaids look bad mixed with some statements that I can only read as pure transphobia. Btw. I have only seen maybe like 10 IT crowd episodes and I don't know who wrote them but IIRC at least one of the ones I have seen came off as really sexist without even trying (or maybe succeeding) being funny in any way..

First off, hello and fuck off to you three as well. 😉 Second, my deepest condolences Jim. I feel a similar way about my Nana and Grandpa. They were so much more supportive of me. I lost my Nana about 3 years ago. My Grandpa is still kicking, god bless him. I guess I'm trying to say I empathize and damn. Third, yours is the only podcast I have kept up with every week. You three are fantastically entertaining. Fourth, dammit! I only heard Jim on Hbomberguy's stream. I wasn't around for Laura and Gavin. Nuts. Well I'm happy to hear you all got to be on there. What an amazing event though. Huge kudos to Hbomberguy and everyone who was the support staff. 😃 I agree with the notion that some of the power of the event came from the fact that it was a cisgender ally "running" the event. It sucks that things are like that for now and hopefully it will change and we can have such a positive event and so much positivity in chat with a member of the LGBT community running it someday. #goals. Until then, I will continue to support events like Hbomberguy's. We need more events like that. We need more positive and healthy voices and events for marginalized people. Fifth, sadly, I don't have much to say about the games this week because I've never played RE2 or Andromeda. I did love the Prince of Persia trilogy though. Those were fun. Because I was an "edgy" teenager. 😆 But I enjoyed them a bit. And finally, dammit Gavin! Stop "ruining" this podcast with your "terrible" sound quality! Sheesh! 😉

Sorry for your loss Jim, I just got back from my grandma's funeral yesterday. She was extremely old and sick for a decade but it still wasn't easy.

Cropply Crab

Sorry to hear about your grandfather, Jim. I lost my 3 closest family members all in a span of 9 months about 5 years ago. Get ready for any dumb random thing that reminds you of your grandfather to get you crying, because that's what you'll probably be dealing with for the rest of your life.

<i>"Right, podcast, we got to do one of those... because we said we would."</i> <b>Jim Sterling expertly hiding sheer panic behind a <i>façade</i> of lulz (2019)</b> What are we supposed to do on the friday following Gretings Wednesday and Fuck-off Thursday? Ignore everyone? But seriously what's the deal with Graham Lineham? I had no idea that he had become an angry old white re-virgin, when he used to be the dude that wrote fucking <i>Father Ted</i> and would appear on shows like <i>Have I Got News For You</i> and seemed like a pretty approachable and chilled-out fellow. Is this really how he wants to end up? Is this really going to be the culmination of his public career? How disappointing! Looks like someone else who I need to boot off my pantheon of pedestals.

Freakish Uproar

My deepest sympathies for your loss, Jim.

When I first heard about the stream, and about Linehan's comments, I knew it would come up in Podquisition. It was a bit surprising and saddening since he seemed like such a nice guy with Father Ted, Black Books and the IT Crowd. I don't want to sound like I'm trying to justify his comments when I say this but this is me trying to give him the benefit of the doubt (because I don't want to believe he's a "bad guy" at heart). So being trans is definitely a valid thing, and it is estimated that 0.01% of people in western society are trans, naturally some of them are kids. It's a good thing that the charity exists to help those kids. I suspect that what Graham's worry / fear is that with the recent acknowledgement of trans people as a part of society, more people are open to the idea of that, and I guess that he thinks that will influence kids who may not be trans, might wrongly think that they are, and they might be sent down a path that eventually ends in pain and regret. It is one thing to know that your body isn't how it should be, but it is another to *think* that it might not be. I personally think it is good to question yourself, but I can see why he has the views that he does.
