Just Cause 4 - The Sandbox Is Full (Jimpressions)

Just Cause 4 is another Just Cause game, and that's okay if you like that sort of thing. I theoretically should like that sort of thing, but the game repeats itself and lacks escalation.

Plus, it's time for the industry to admit that maybe the open world genre is overly crowded and that if you're not going to give a game an obscene budget, a smaller scale might work better.

Well, this wouldn't be my favorite shooter either, because I find the movement console-clunky, and it does look repetitive. BUT it doesn't have capital-I Inventory nor Crafting! Both of which I detest utterly in action games. So - unlike Far Cry something - I won't be chasing a pig across fields, trying to shoot it with a primitive bow and arrow so that I can make a belt to hold my axe FFS. There are levels to fight through rather than grind through. That alone puts it in the interest class for me.

I hear the points about it being unimaginative and can see how that would be a drag. But the last 2 games were repetitive and I loved them. I feel that the grappling hook and wing suit are unique and wonderful aspects to this series that make me want to play this more than other open world games... but again, if the story and missions are dull, that's still dull.

This sort of thing is my bag, baby. I loved 2 and 3. It's is a blank canvas on which to create chaos in inventive ways. I can see how the missions are repetitive if you're playing for the missions and story. That's not how I played the last two games. When I get to another version of the same mission or another similarly set up village or base to one I've already handled, the new challenge is "what new and crazy way can I come up with to take this place apart?" And each iteration adds new devices to combine in different ways with environmental objects, vehicles, NPCs, animals, etc. So for me, I'm excited about 4 because of the addition of the rockets and balloons and weather events. I'm excited about the new chaotic, creative opportunities these additional tools will open up.
