Everything he did on that day served to make his passing more and more meaningful; he taught his sons and everyone watching the virtue of forgiveness and what it means to be a family by forgiving Squard after he stabbed him, (literally) stood up to Blackbeard even in death, and spited the world government by echoing Roger's sentiment with his last breath.
