Darksiders III - DarkSoulsSiders (Jimpressions)

REUPLOADED TO CORRECT A MISTAKE, SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE!

Darksiders used to be a damn good copy of Zelda. Now it's a damn awful ripoff of Dark Souls. Yet another game that doesn't understand why the Souls series is successful, THQ Nordic's heartbreaking Darksiders III annoys and exasperates at every turn.

On top of that, it's a stripped down sequel, thoroughly reduced in scale compared to Darksiders II... and the first Darksiders, for that matter! It's ugly, its performance is horrible, and goes so far in cloning Dark Souls it even starts stealing lore and terminology. Utter garbage.

After finally getting around to this game, I feel like Jim and I are playing two different titles. As a recent fan of the series I've been loving the game, the combat has felt satisfying and a clear evolution of Darksiders II combat, and the introduction of timed charge attacks for sub-weapons has been a pretty fun addition. I also like how they fiddled with their take on the "Estus" system, making it a drop from enemies as opposed to something you get from resting so you can just keep pushing on if you're feeling lucky, and if you die then you don't really lose much. I also don't agree with the Zelda influences being gone, there's no dungeons but I don't remember puzzles in Dark Souls. I also don't lament the loss of random loot drops, never cared for that in Darksiders II; the whole game felt super bloated to me. If I think of this game as a sequel to Darksider II with a hefty amount of "Souls" design thrown in as opposed to a game trying to copy Dark Souls, it's been really enjoyable. I'll give you the technical issues (which were greatly helped with a recent patch, thankfully) and underwhelming bosses, but even with those I've greatly enjoyed my time. I don't consider it a leap back for the series at all, it's not perfect but I do think it's a worthwhile entry in my book. Edit: Just want to say that I respect Jim's perspective on the game and do get why he was disappointed. It's just such a far-cry from my personal experience that I wanted to express it somehow

Well this video sold me on not even bothering with this lame ass game. I was rather excited as Jim was about a new Darksiders, it's sad that there was little effort into doing anything original with this series.

Damn. I'm sorry to hear that Jim. It is such a blow when a beloved franchise regresses.

Cheers for the review. A shame about the downgraded combat and navigation of the world. Is the story progression appropriate to the last games at least? enough to see potential for a good Darksiders 4 story? And I hate to ask this because I'm happy to pay full price for good games, but a good game on sale? Thank you Jim Sterling Son.

“I really like whips” Hey, me too! “as weapons in games.” Oh, yeah… yeah, that's what I meant, too. >.>

In case anyone was wondering what Jim thought of Lords Of The Fallen like I was, here's his review: Lords Of The Fallen: Complete Edition Review – Discount Souls (I do remember reading this now, but I forgot most of it.)

Oh man :/ I loved Darksiders I & II

Damn - I can't say I'm surprised; but that is a pity. I was ecstatic when I heard the rights to Darksiders had been picked up, but when I'd heard comparisons to Dark Souls my optimism was shot to hell.

Man, that’s scathing. I preordered the collectors edition....hope I still get some entertainment out of it.

Makes me so sad! I'm hoping I'll still enjoy it.
