How Fighting Games Are Carved Up To Extract Your Cash (The Jimquisition)

If this video were comprehensive, we'd be here all week. Instead, let Street Fighter from Street Fighter tell you how game companies have set about slicing fighting games apart to make more cash from an audience they've secured leverage over.

From SoulCalibur VI to Mortal Kombat, everyone is here!

Do you think the majority of a work for a character is conceptualizing them? I genuinely don't understand what you mean. They have to rebuild these characters from the ground up in all aspects except the core ideas of what they do, so how would it be easier to add returning characters exactly?

Zachary DAmbrosio

Wow.. "An established character doesn't require less resources to make in a brand new installment of the game."? The sheer ignorance of that statement alone is absolutely mindboggling. Never mind the fact that that is not what's happening here; this isn't sacrificing a veteran character for someone new - this is cutting out a character that is already there & complete so that they can basically extort people who use her as a main by, in effect, holding her hostage. As for reviewing DLCs on a case-by-case basis; that is a luxury the consumers may have. But people in the industry (especially the critique end of things) do not share said luxury by sheer volume alone. Even if they did, it is not inaccurate to say DLCs are /normally/ a bad thing, since most of time (more than 85% of the time, at the very least) they are. Unless you have the luxury of checking for yourself, it is not unfair to base judgement on factors such as reported data, history of the dev's responsible, timing (especially in relation to release & other events of significance in the industry), and perhaps most critically the history of the industry as a whole. While it IS possible for good devs to be shit with their DLC & vice versa, you're trying to justify a generally shitty practice with the rarest of happy circumstances.

Why do you put whether or not a dlc is or isn't a shameless cash grab entirely into the developer? A good decision can come out with shitty dlc that is basically a scam and a bad dec can come out with dlc that is actually worth it. Why would I do anything except treat it on a case by case basis? Further I didn't go into it, but Jim's argument about old characters being held back is "a bit shit really". An established character doesn't require less resources to make in a brand new installment of the game. So when we get a new installment on a new system would you rather never see fresh characters and only see returning characters because the devs put all their resources into the vets? Idk what you specifically want, but that'd be a bit boring.

multiple seasons passes ARE a bad thing, only blatant shills for publishers would suggest otherwise. What exactly is wrong with delaying a game? That option would've been vastly preferable to the greedy bullshit Arc pulled, I don't see why people whine about game delays so much, they can only improve the game. Street Fighter V absolutely would've benefited from being delayed until it was properly finished, had it not been rushed to cater to the niche hardcore SF community and had it not stupidly been excluded from Xbox(from what I hear Capcom admitted they only took Sony's money to get the game done faster, they didn't actually NEED the money, the game would've come out without Sony's money, it just would've taken longer is all) it's sales undoubtedly would've been far better.

I'd have to largely disagree with a lot of the sentiments provided by the video. The only one that I think is near inexcusable is day 1 DLC characters, there isn't really a defense and definitely a sign of a greedy publisher 100%. I would however especially raise issue with the idea that multiple season passes are a bad thing. I play a lot of DBFZ and I am always excited to try out the new characters, so it made sense to buy the season pass. When I bought it, I bought it with the complete understanding of how much content I was getting with it. It is highly speculated that there will be a season 2 of DLC, and I genuinely hope there will be, because I want to see even more characters from the franchise I love show up. If Arc didn't do a multi season structure, then there options for providing more characters would have been 1) delay the game a considerable amount of time, 2)Put more characters in a season pass then what would be financially viable, or 3) Come out with a second game fairly quickly and charge everyone a bunch of additional money for what is essentially just more characters. None of those sound at all better than just a second season of DLC. Not to mention the fact that I want the game I play a lot to have continued support, that's sick.

I really love Injustice 2. But I realized when it came out that I would have to shell out for the Ultimate Edition to get any enjoyment out of it. Very sad to have to do that, but I couldn't imagine playing it without that season pass.

Intro made me chuckle. Never change, Jim. I will say, though, even the DLC in Smash for the Wii U isn't great. Bayonetta is so OP compared to most of the other characters that you essentially have to buy her to have any chance of doing well. The top 8 at most tournaments are almost always a majority Bayonetta mains. Also, if you're bringing a setup to a tournament you have to have all of the DLC unlocked so that people can play whichever character they want.

I sinked so much time into the first Injustice but just felt ripped off by Injustice 2. I know the first one had DLC but 2 just pissed me off with the microtransactions. Felt like the first one had more content too.

The only one I've played recently that I really enjoyed was Skullgirls, which came with all the characters in a single download on my Vita. Though I admit, the genre hasn't interested me much over the past 20 years as I've grown up to appreciate games with stories, a point of view, and something to actually say.

Soul Calibur been pulling this bullshit since the second game, as SC2 had characters exclusive to each version of the game-PS2 had Heihachi from Tekken, Gamecube had Link and Xbox had Spawn.

LifeIsStrange

Shit like this makes me happy that I lost interest in fighting games over a decade ago(with some rare exceptions like the Def Jam series and Urban Reign)

LifeIsStrange

People want to be part of the competitive community and play the games their friends are. It's easy to be patient and wait as an adult, but I can see how kids and teens are tricked into rushing and paying $100+ for a single full game.

BJams

Why anyone still buys new fighting game releases even without the DLC bullshit is beyond me. There are thousands of these games already to choose from and other than graphical improvements, the newest ones aren't and revolutionary new fun way to approach the genre - as shown by the fact the SFII gets released on every console and is still more fun to play than most of the modern games it inspired.
