Podquisition Episode 193: It Ain't Getting Better For None Of Us

Honestly I really enjoyed Arkham knight. Might be because of the tank combat and I'm an absolute Tread head but probably more because it was my first introduction to batman in general. The story, the atmosphere and yes the visuals all had me interested in the game to the end. Hearing Batman & Alfred talk back and forth made me determined to rush to the next mission. Scarecrow talking on the big screen didn't really bother me, if anything it spurred me on (Riddler was definitely annoying though). And honestly (and I might get lynched for this) I really liked the Arkham Knight character. I liked how he toys with batman by how much he knows about batman. he was hate filled, determined but patient, willing to put things of until the last moment & learning who the Arkham Knight is & his motivations, I was still wowed despite not knowing who [SPOILER] is because again it was my first batman experience only knowing what I know through the game itself, He hated Batman for almost justifiable reasons (Almost, batman is obsessed with his mission but he didn't technically [SPOILER]). Yes he was whiny but he was a tortured soul, his delusion was the most interesting part of him for me. I didn't mind the repetitiveness of the side missions, but the biggest turn off is the Riddler trophies. I would understand if you had to scan all the riddles (There's this one that you can't scan until after you free Catwoman so it wouldn't make much of a difference), but EVERYTHING!? Batman couldn't do all of that in one night. Anyways that's more than enough of my (perhaps arrogant) opinion. I didn't mean this to be a rant or to put down your opinions but at the same time I had a lot to get off my chest.

OK, so it does happen from time to time that someone ad-libs something in a movie or something doesn't go exactly as planned. But the "the remote didn't go off the first time in Dark Knight" thing is a myth. It gets repeated a lot because it SOUNDS like it should be true, and Heath Ledged looks genuinely surprised. But he looks surprised because he was that good an actor. This particular scene is discussed in detail in DVD/Blu-Ray commentary. They talk extensively about how the explosives were rigged for the scene and how the scene was (as they describe it) endlessly rehearsed with Ledger. Bottom line, the timing of the explosions was deliberate, and if Heath Ledger improvised any part of it, it WAS within the originally envisioned boundaries. There was certainly no problem with the remote. Heck, even without the confirmation from the creators of the movie, this urban legend is kind of a pet peeve of mine, because sure, it makes for a good story, but thinking about it even for a moment reveals that it doesn't make much sense. Flubs and improvisation and ad-libbing happens in situations where there's some room for chaos. Actors may say something differently or forget something or suddenly have an idea. The thing is, explosives are one area where there's no room left for error if at all possible. There were numerous explosive charges on set, they were prepared and handled by professionals. They were detonated by them, too. I know movie magic is very persuasive, but the remote was a movie prop. It's not up to an actor to detonate the charges. It's done in reaction to the actor pressing a button on the prop. Just think how many things could go accidentally wrong, even between scenes if an actor carried an actual detonator for multiple explosives in his hand or his pocket or whatever. That's just not how any of this works. And granted, the fact that Heath Ledger acted surprised so well that people REFUSE TO BELIEVE that this was, in fact, acting is tribute to just how great of an actor he was. And I understand the reasons people repeat this urban legend. It humanises the actor, it makes the entire film-making process more mysterious and interesting. As I said, it makes for a good story, a story that FEELS like it should be true. But in this case, it's just not true, and the creators have said as much.
