YouTubers Say The Darndest Things

Comments

Sooo... It seems that for some reason my replies here keep disappearing without notice, and I have no idea why. I think this might be due to moderation. If for others my comment does show up, please notify me of this. If it does get removed by a moderator or something, could they send me a message as to why this keeps happening to my comment and what term I violated, so that I can adjust my comment to to comply. So, this is my 3rd time posting this, and I hope it sticks. Annnnyyyywayyy.... Reading up on that whole PewDiePie thing, I have come across some rather interesting thoughts on it. So, that whole thing with the sign was all about a comment on something that seems to be a Craigslist kind of thing, an app that allows you to call on someone to do something, like paint your house. For some reason PewDiePie thought this was a stupid idea and decided to illustrate this by hiring two guys that couldn't speak English and hold up said sign. Now, the whole idea of opposing something that lets a person earn some extra money in a time when there are widespread lay-offs and people are eager to get some work, and actively fighting such an initiative seems dubious on its own, but for your first response to that by using a sign that instills racial and religious hatred is testament that there might be something fundamentally wrong with him. If your first thought is to make such a sign to illustrate a completely unrelated point, something is very wrong. Now, there is another way to go and to look at this, and this might be an interesting subject for a Jimquisition, so I thought I would share it. As PewDiePie already said that he did it as a 'joke' we can be sure that this was not his intention and I doubt he would have the insight and mental capacity to view it in the way that I'm going to describe. That whole clip can also be seen as a social commentary, an illustration of mob mentality. People doing something that they have been told to do without fully grasping or understanding the implication, context or purpose of what they have been told to do. I only need to point at the Mass Effect: Andromeda thing for an example of that. A hate mob descending down on someone without that mob having the proper information or background on why they are doing it or if they are even aimed at the right person. A similar thing can be said for the DDOS attacks that Jim has had due to his Zelda review, people attacking him without reading the article and purely basing their actions on the score without proper context. If Jim was to use this idea for a video, it might be fun if at the start he holds up a sign with 'Ik lik paarden pikken.' which is Dutch for 'I lick horse cocks.' Without being told what he is saying, he would also not have the understanding what that sign says, but still proclaims it. Naturally a translation of that sign would need to be posted at the bottom of the screen as very few people can understand Dutch. Well, anyway, thanks for reading my long rant, and I hope that maybe someone gets some good ideas from that.

I love your content

Didn't really feel this article. Isn't it obvious that Social Media stars can't be axed by a single entity like studios, networks and labels? I also think that all that attention doesn't help. This seems to be the modus operandi these days: 1. YT guy says sth racist, causes shitstorm 2. 1000 articles get written about scandal, 1 or 2 of them are always end up being out of line/insulting/not well researched 3. YT guy cherry picks 1 or 2 flawed articles for his apology video and screams "witchhunt!" 4. Follower count/money basically stays the same 5. Racists feel encouraged, cause "SJW's" have taken the L I also disagree with using subscription counts as a metric. Just because YT guy X has X million subs, doesn't mean X million people are paying attention to him. I have subscribed to plenty of channels and never watched a single video again.

I get where you are coming from. But the Pewdiepie story isn't as black and white as you might think. He wanted to show ppl how messed this app called "FIVER" is and what poor people are willing to do for 5 €. That's how the "Death to all Jews" sign came together. There were also some ill advised jokes about Hitler. WSJ hitpiece was 99% inaccurate and there is no proof whatsoever, that PDP is a nazi. That being said, you have all the rights in the world to be offendend.

Brilliant article. I am having a great deal of fun forcing everyone i know to read it XD

Wow

Well said Jim! I should expect nothing less!

Well. Good stuff, man. Time to make popcorn and watch the comments and fallout. I'm just waiting for the next nutters to attack your website at this point. Lord knows some of these bastards have the Froth.

I keep asking you to have my babies Jim. You keep not replying. This is clearly your secret message to me that you will, indeed, impregnate yourself with my spawn.

While I wholeheartedly agree with this editorial, I always feel sad when people have to point out the obvious. What you wrote there is what everyone should have known from the very start. I honestly consider all of this "common sense". Perhaps common sense doesn't exist anymore.

I personally feel PewDiePie was a bit undeserved, not really JonTron. I think criticizing PDP's jokes were fair, I don't personally believe that Nazi jokes or trivializing the holocaust is particularly funny, but I think there's a sizable amount of people out there that do and they're not all alt-right neo nazi's. I get that PewDiePie is a huge internet celebrity with a young fan base, but I do feel taking out some of his lazy jokes out of his entire youtube video catalog to insinuate he's a Nazi sympathizer is a hit piece. JonTron however said some outlandish and borderline/straight-up racist remarks that have no factual backing. I like his comedy videos but he said it, and he gets to deal with the fallout fairly.

Great article, Jim. The only thing I would disagree with is your caveat that what PewDiePie and JonTron did are not comparable. As a Jew (however irreligious I may be, I am still ethnically Jewish) I feel these are completely on the same level. Calling for the death of an entire subset of the population is not a joke. Especially not with the rash of bomb threats towards synagogues occurring across the country or the swastikas popping up everywhere.

This is the exact breath of fresh not alt-right air I needed. Thanks Jim <3.
