I think a lot of the mediocrity is that it was not made by Nintendo. The Nintendo Company is the one who hands out the licenses for the Pokemon franchise. Niantic was actually a Google company that broke off to make games... Or something. Still fuzzy on those details. It's addicting because it feeds our primitive hunter/gatherer need. XD

Probably even more so once the initial bugs are sorted out. Besides, the US finally got to enjoy a Pokemon game release before Japan. ;P
