Review: The Beginner's Guide

http://www.thejimquisition.com/2015/10/the-beginners-guide-review/

Here, I attempt to review a game by saying nothing about it, in the hopes I say EVERYTHING about it. Pretentious, no?

Review: The Beginner's Guide

Comments

Not one to post or share thoughts on the internet but I thought I'd break my rule temporarily to say, thanks for the review and all that you do. I don't believe I have ever immediately purchased a game I didn't already know something about after reading a single review (another first). That said, The Beginner's Guide, your review, and in some way maybe what we as fans want from you has given me much to think about. On that note, I would like to quickly add I've been a long time fan of your work (even the few and far between bits I may not agree with if to at least to challenge why I disagree) as it has brought me laughs and joy while toiling away at my desk. Please continue your fine work and lastly...Thank (Fucking) God for you, sir.

I don't even know exactly what to say here. I've become a fan of yours over the past several years after discovering your Jimquisition videos at The Escapist alongside Zero Punctuation (the series that brought me there in the first place). Since then, though I still love ZP, your material has become one of the highlights of my day/week/however-often-you-can-get-stuff-out. And now, after reading this review of a game that I will most definitely be playing in the near future... you've made me cry. Goddammit Jim... Thank God for you. Thank God for Jim Sterling and his amazing talents to entertain and be his fucking self with the rest of us. Thank you. And may all your days be a kick in the ass of everyone that hurt you in childhood.

Jim Sterling

This post seems influenced somewhat by the Jimquisition subreddit. There was some discussion about the Podquisition's latest podcast (episode 45, the Patreon Conspiracy) as potentially leaning too much towards mocking assholery and too little towards stimulating conversation, and that this might be part of a problematic trend. Jim popped in to say "I actually agree that we've been a bit too focused on that lately. I don't want the show dominated by it, and I think we'll try and scale that stuff back, at least until something REALLY stupid happens." That was really nice, especially given that it was a really small discussion thread. This review is very touching... especially so given that last night I also watched his squirty play of The Archetype -- which was a brutal and seemingly hamfisted portrayal of domestic violence and mental health issues. Just to add a drop in the bucket of encouragement, I want to say that I value your work, your voice, your balance of razor sharp intellectual insight and base, juvenile humour. I also very much appreciate the fact that you take criticism on board and and constantly self-reflective -- that's one of your best qualities, and makes your work better. Wonderful stuff. And I'm going to play The Beginner's Guide tonight.

Thank you so much. <3

Jim Sterling

Jim ‘Fucking’ Sterling, I love and appreciate the work that you are doing, your personality adds to, rather than detracts from, your reviews and the other content that you create. I would not be here writing this, if this wasn’t my honest opinion. Even though I do not know you on any personal level, other than what is on the internet, I still want you to know that there are people who appreciate your work and even though this is probably fairly easy to see (especially on this site), I still wanted to tell you. Thanks for all the work that you do and keep doing what you want to do!
