Added 2015-08-24 16:01:52 +0000 UTCWith the imminent launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, a fresh outrage has spawned over its inclusion of microtransactions. I love outrages about microtransactions, so much so that I coined the phrase "Fee To Pay" years ago.
Here we are again - the practice of "Fee To Pay" is more common, but no less distasteful. Let's revisit the stupid world of "feemium" games, where you gotta pay... if you wanna pay.

2015-08-25 03:27:58 +0000 UTCStrongly agree with the sentiment with one possible exception, one I'd love to hear Jim's opinion on: GTA Online. GTAV itself is (so far as I am aware) exempt from microtransactions, and Online is completely playable without dropping any money on it beyond the original GTAV box purchase (for anyone who doesn't know: you can buy "Shark Cards" with real money, which gives you a set amount of in-game currency, ranging from something like 100k up to 8million GTA$. There's no content, gameplay, aesthetics, unlockables or any of that kind of thing that's pay-gated). However, it is still a microtransaction in a full, buy-to-play AAA title. The reason I bring this up, however, is that Rockstar have indicated that the continuing release of free DLC for the game (including that whacking great Heists update earlier in the year) is because of Shark Card sales; the reasoning being that this way, everyone has access to everything, people are split apart by owning different bits of DLC content, and they can continue to develop this stuff without having to directly charge for it. Where do you reckon that stands, compared to Dead Space 3? Is it an exception to the rule? Is it a different beast entirely? Or is it more of the same drek?
