The Jimquisition: Walking Simulators

On a very shiny and chrome Jimquisition, your old pal Jim Sterling looks at the games most commonly referred to as Walking Simulators. It's a term meant insultingly, and it can be rather unfairly applied.
Sometimes, however, the application IS pertinent.
Here's how to avoid making sure you earn the dubious distinction.
I could be wrong, I feel like the mother of all these art games are Yumi Nikki

Something you said in this video reminded me of a piece of writing advice I heard once: "Is your story the most exciting part of your main character's or world's life? If not, why aren't you telling that us about that part instead?" Admittedly, the "piece together what happened here through scattered audio logs" model has been done many times extremely well (Bioshock, Metroid Prime, etc.) because it allows for a very measured pace to exposition, so I can see the temptation to go the "aftermath" route. However, in those examples, the story still builds to a great event in which we have direct involvement--there's a satisfying sense of payoff. I agree that that is key.
