The Jimquisition 28: When Publishers Kick, Developers Start

The age of the re-animators is here. Game genres previously thought "dead" by so-called AAA publishers are getting their revival thanks to the crowdfunding efforts of such projects as Pillars of Eternity, Yooka-Laylee, and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. The big-budget world has made the message quite clear - it neither wants nor needs creative, passionate developers anymore. It would rather clone Clash of Clans and Call of Duty all day. Fine. Creative, passionate developers don't need the big-budget world either. As sad as this year's been for games, we're still in a potential golden age.

Alejandro Jodorowsky used Kickstarter. Alejandro Jodorowsky was interested in making a game. So then...

hey Jim usually i pretty much agree with the majority of things you state but I think in regards to These Kickstarters I feel you are off the mark. These guys still have huge backing from the old cadre of Publishers they are essentially useing Kickstarter for a different way of getting pre-sales. http://www.polygon.com/2015/5/19/8624665/big-indie-kickstarters-are-killing-actual-indies

You did see the Konami mobile game article! :D *dances for joy* (Not that I doubted you would, but I'm still happy.) I've been pretty down on video games lately and the mere reveal of AC: Syndicate did not do me any favors as far as that is concerned. I thank God for Jim, and thank you, Jim, for lifting my spirits by predicting the dawn of this new age of publisher-free gaming (or at least as much as that is possible).

My inner pedant would like to thank you for saying "For all intents and purposes" correctly.

Hey Jim, do you think Kojima really would want to make a Metal Gear-esque Game? I kinda think that despite the whole Konmai crap Kojima is maybe happy to finally get away from MGS and able to move on doing new stuff, diffrent stuff.

Oh do not tempt my grandest imaginations, of a Hideo Kojima and Del Toro horror combo of having the even slightest chance of happening anymore. I would throw money at that in a heartbeat, Del Toro needs some gaming love.
