The Jimquisition 14: The Molyneux Cycle

Making this week's episode didn't exactly feel good. I don't like singling out individuals in general, especially these days, but the current narrative being erected around Peter Molyneux is just... skewed. Hopefully, this helps contextualize exactly why people are so frustrated with the man and his promises, and why folks aren't just arbitrarily pillorying him over one failed Kickstarter. The man's got 20 years of cyclical chicanery to face.

Peter Molyneux is not a living legend. He's living a lie.

Fantastic Jimquisition. Stellar (humane) dissection of The Molyneux... I think you inspire people to keep in mind that Peter is human and that (mass) bullying isn't right. This is another reason I chose to support you! I first played Fable when Lost Chapters released on PC. I loved the hell out of it and still enjoy playing it to this date. Then again, I never read any previews or articles about the game, I just bought it. I wonder how I would've felt about the game had I been following it.

I didn't agree with any of that and I'm pretty sure, when I signed up to fund you, that you promised you'd always agree with...wait a second...my bad... (backs out of the room)

Just read the RPS Interview, and while your Jimquisition today was quite harsh (and entirely justified, don't get me wrong), it was merciful compared to said interview. I don't think anyone in their right mind has the right to call you a bully. This guy IS a pathological liar, and he needs to be called out. THIS is the type of behavior that is killing the industry, and he is but the face of it. Molyneux should be shamed so that EA, Ubisoft, Digital Homicide Studios, and all the other cartoon villains of the video game industry know that they are on notice.

Thank you! :-D

That was the best ending to any Jimquisition I've seen so far, I've been watching for a very long time.

The RPS interview was brutal, but very, very necessary in order to cut through Molyneux's decades of nonsense and confront him directly about his failings. His attempts to play the victim are still working as I saw people on NeoGaf, of all places, coming down on RPS for being too blunt and "lacking respect". If you want to talk about lacking respect, then look at Mr Molyneux and his apparent contempt for his audience after years and years and years of pulling this same old tired act. The worst thing though? He was right to not respect his audience, because they're still there even now, calling anyone who dares to criticise the man a "bully" and saying they want an industry full of people like him - people who artificially hype their games, exaggerate just what can actually be done in them, milk the audience via micro-transactions, admit to lying to secure public funding and then blame that same funding platform for his actions. In short, these people seem to want someone who will lie to them, so long as he does it with a greasy enough fake-smile and a kind of kooky demeanour. In an industry full of examples of gamers finally starting to push back against the false claims of the PR hype machine for games like Colonial Marines and Watch Dogs, there apparently still exists a group with their heads up their own arses who want to keep being screwed over by the worst snake-oil salesman in the business.

The whole "I'm never going to speak to the press again!" thing is just another unrealistic promise made by Molyneux. I'm with Jim, I reckon he'll be back at some point to talk up his latest project. In future, if we believe what he says about his games before release and are then disappointed, we have no one to blame but ourselves.

This video sums up why I was so happy to support you, I really appreciate your manner when discussing things like this. You always come across as fair when others seem to be doing a bit of glorifying. While I didn't disagree with RPS asking hard questions I was a little uncomfortable with how it came across, but I really enjoyed seeing how you put your personal light on the whole situation. It helped me remember the years of stories to come out of Peter. Great video and great viewpoint!
