Star-Nose

Star-noses are massive, eyeless, subterranean predators that hunt the depths of the earth for other burrowing creatures. Occasionally their prey includes the beasts and humanoids that dwell in caverns or along the surface of their hunting grounds. Using the hyper-sensitive tendrils that extend from its snout, the star-nose can detect the subtlest tremors and seismic waves in the soil around them. Mysteriously, this organ can also sense the presence and direction of nearby magic. Star-noses can be trained to emit a squeak when they’ve detected an arcane ore deposit or a buried magical treasure in exchange for a juicy porpoise grub.
As domesticated beasts of burden, Star-noses are the main workhorses of the Sunken Path. With their superior strength and digging ability, they can haul cargo, help navigate, and bore tunnels through the subterranean lands that the monks traverse. The star-nose’s innate ability to detect magic is key to the Sunken Path’s mithral and adamantine extraction for weapons and artifacts.
