Swan Maiden

Swan maidens are shapeshifting fey that dwell in and around water. They can be seen bathing in secluded rivers, ponds, coves, and swamps. Swan maidens live their lives split between the form of a swan and the form of a woman of human or elven lineage. Akin to nymphs, each maiden’s essence is born of and tethered to her natural habitat. A swan maiden whose domain is under threat will defend it with surprising ferocity.
       Swan Skin. In order to polymorph into a swan, each maiden possesses a swan skin. This magic cloak appears to be the complete hide and plumage of a swan. By donning the cloak, the maiden can merge with it to become a swan. While in the form of a woman, a swan maiden sheds her swan skin and keeps it nearby, perhaps on the bank of a river or draped over the limb of a tree. These cloaks are sometimes stolen by those who covet the beauty or magical power of a swan maiden.
       Alluring Elegance. Although swan maidens are naturally timid and reclusive, their extraordinary grace draws the attention of anyone who chances to see them. Travelers through remote and pristine wilderness have told tales of gorgeous women or swans with brilliantly stunning plumage bathing in sylvan streams. In these tales, the sudden sight of such beauty overcomes the traveler, who lingers for a period of time beyond their recollection. When this entrancing stupor passes, the traveler is usually alone without food or shelter, lost in an unknown realm. In other cases, a covetous, lecherous, or destructive impetus is evoked, typically to the unfortunate end of the traveler.
       Freedom Above All. The sovereignty of a swan maiden is of paramount importance to her. The joy of an immortal life is in the frivolous exploration and capricious luxuriation of one’s sylvan realm. Without the autonomy to do so, a swan maiden’s charm quickly wilts and curdles into something monstrous. This liberatory instinct extends to the woodland beings of a swan maiden’s domain, as well as to any defenseless creatures that wander into it. For instance, trappers might find it impossible to catch anything in a swan maiden’s realm, the bindings of prisoners might loosen themselves spontaneously, and nefarious actions that impede the freedom of others, despoil nature, or corrupt free will may be ruthlessly avenged by the swan maiden.
       Merciless in Vengeance. If a swan maiden is wronged, she will reveal her true form: a hybrid shape that blends the humanoid and animalistic aspects of their being. Her appearance becomes frighteningly sinister, giving way to a motley synthesis of hair, skin, and feathers. Bladed tentacles extend from the maiden’s body with twisted resemblance to a many-necked swan. A swan maiden in this fearsome form is capable of wreaking havoc on her enemies, which she undertakes ceaselessly and without mercy until retribution has been meted out.
       Immortal Nature. A swan maiden doesn't require food, drink, or sleep.
