After the guide had chosen a resting place for the evening, Abdou walked to the two spots in the perimeter most vulnerable to ambush and tapped the end of his spear on the ground. It emitted a soft thud each time it struck the dry soil, and Abdou felt resonant vibrations through the darkwood shaft as his mind tethered itself to the spot. The effect was invisible, but Abdou knew that he would be instantly alerted if an unwanted visitor attempted to sneak into camp tonight. After a song and hot stew, he would rest easy.
