Shattered Revenant Blade
Weapon (dagger/longsword), very rare (requires attunement)
The jagged edge of this shattered longsword can be used as a dagger. While grasping the hilt, you can use a bonus action to cause a ghostly blade to appear, allowing it to be used as a longsword, or make the blade disappear. You have a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon and, if you are proficient with daggers or longswords, you are proficient with it.
While the ghost blade exists, this magic longsword gains the following properties:
- The ghost blade borrows your life essence to manifest itself. You take necrotic damage equal to one roll of your hit die and your hit point maximum is reduced by that amount while the blade exists. This damage cannot be reduced in any way.
- It sheds 20 feet of dim light, has the finesse property, and deals necrotic damage instead of slashing damage. Attacks with this longsword ignore resistance and immunity to necrotic damage if the target is undead.
- On a hit, you can force the target to make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw. On a failure, the target takes 1d8 necrotic damage and becomes enfeebled for 1 minute. While enfeebled, the target has disadvantage on Strength checks and saving throws, and deals only half damage with weapon attacks that use Strength. At the end of each of the target's turns, it can remake the save, ending the enfeeblement on a success. A creature that succeeds on this saving throw is immune to the effect for 24 hours.
- You can see 60 feet into the Ethereal Plane and can make attacks with this sword against creatures on that plane.
As an action while holding this weapon, you can cast the etherealness spell. Once this property is used, it cannot be used again until you complete a long rest.
The shattered blade lay untouched and forgotten for hundreds of years. Sundered in desperate battle, the spirit of its fallen owner lingers as a hungry revenant. Whoever wields the sword now can feed it their own life essence to evoke a ghostly semblance of its former shape. Perhaps finding the shards and reforging the blade will release the revenant and restore its power…
