NEW VIDEO: Loki & Tarkovsky

Hi all!

EDIT: Updated with final video link

Here's an early access / rough cut of my next video. The full version will be out on Tuesday. This version doesn't have a conclusion yet, and there are some minor bugs I still need to fix (sound glitches, rerecording lines, adding music, etc). But it should still be watchable. It's a sprawling video (over 90 minutes!) so if anything's confusing, let me know!

Thanks as always for your support! Enjoy!

NEW VIDEO: Loki & Tarkovsky

Although I have to say I was a bit disappointed when the https://mubi.com wanted to have my credit card. I mean, come on! As much as I love your stuff, it's not like I'm going to give you a carte blanche!

Sorry for getting carried away, I was too excited! Why is it so hard to just say I appreciate your insight without turning it into a competition of some sort? Please keep up the good unpretetntious work you have been doing for a while and don't get spooked by the fact that once you mention Tarkovsky, you'll going to get a whole new bunch of fans.

Exactly in the middle of "Zerkalo" there is some foam from a hot cup on a cool table which disappears like everything disappears. Who would imagine these days of producing a multi-million production with everything hanging on some foam. Tarkovsky could do it several times, although he had to abuse the system to get to where he wanted to go. Eventually it wouldn't work any longer and he had to leave abroad. Then he made Nostagia.

I was going to post here a link to the exact point at "Solaris" where everything starts to float and then I decided not. One has to suffer some ninety minutes of discussion of epistemology before of the floating, and it wouldn't feel the same without the suffering. Thank You Maggie Mae Fish once more for making it possible to even suggest a discussion of how much one should suffer before having granted some bliss!

saw “disney” add bevor the movie starts, after I tried to click in the end to not see my name . had a lot of fun in confusion

Thank you! Thank you very much! I'm a long time fan of Tarkovsky and I never knew him like you did, just like that. I remember asking you to zap your superhuman analytic power on him and this was the end result, ... pretty good, well done! It seems like this was more a journey than the end result. By the end of the video (which was a bit too long BTW) you said something very deep, something totally out of the line of the bulk of the video. Something that bound together Tarkovsky and life and Joe Biden and Loki. It didn't quite hit the bull's eye which is why I don't remember what it was, but with two out of those four ingredients always available... Sorry for the rambling. I have no idea what this new Russian approach has had to your popularity. There is an anti-Russian campaign going on and Mr. Putin is also quite a horrible person as well. Andrey Tarkovsky, on the other hand, has nothing to do with socialist realism. Except for the fact that he had to fight against it all his life. Despite of it, he managed to make a few great movies. Thank you for bringing him in to the analysis. I'll have to watch a couple of times more to get the full idea. So far what I saw is excellent! Thank you! If I was any younger I would say I love you!

I honestly believe that you are the first person in the decadent west to ever present any analysis of Stalker without resorting to snobbery. Every part of this essay was an absolute treat even if the marvel-esque end credit scene was rather disturbing. Ps. I think you may just give Richard E. Grant a run for his money as the variant who best understands glorious purpose.

You really think this system has five years left? I'm astonished it hasn't already collapsed. Great video, Maggie! Ya know, for someone I was introduced to as a comedienne, you produce some of the deepest, most thought-provoking content available in media today. You just do it with your unique sense of humor which prevents the topic from becoming another stale, stodgy lecture. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

What an amazing essay! I admit that I have been looking forward to it since you teased the title on twitter a while back. It has given me much to ponder, I found the segment on virtual war especially enlightening as it was novel to me. And overall you deal with such large and complex themes gracefully and lucidly. I am tempted to ramble on here as the video has put so many thoughts in my mind but I will simply say bravo! and that I look forward to the conclusion! :)

(Disclaimer - Only ~20 minutes in, and everything I know about film theory comes from YouTube) I think Tarkovsky’s film theory agrees that video games are art. If meaning is variable based on each viewers perspective and experience with the piece, then the experiential nature of video games is of equal artistic value. Great vid so far! Enjoying and learning a lot from this one. *edit* That. Was. Amazing. Every year there are a handful of video essays that fundamentally shift my perspective. This is one of those videos this year. Outstanding work! It’d be cool if the conclusion provided some recommendations (preferable movies/shows/videos) for exploring/enhancing my Tarkovsky Lens (not sure if that’s a term but you get my drift). Watching this, I started to wonder if I’ve lost that direct emotional connection to cinema. The kind of connection I had in my youth. Hard to say if that’s a result of impending middle-age, decades of montage, or 5 years of video essays getting me to think a little bit more deeply. While the connections you made were excellent and informative, the immediate impact of this video is a desire to feel movies more deeply. Can’t wait to rewatch upon full release.

I love the small audio touches, like spices, that add flavour to the flow of information -- "Jeremy Renner..!!!", "from your blood!". I feel a bit silly pointing out these small things amidt the whole massively great work but I just love stuff like that.

Just here to mention “Solaris”.

Have Goals

Stalker is one of his more challenging movies. If you want to start with something a little more accessible, I'd suggest Mirror. It's more straightforward (but still super experimental) and it's only 90 minutes.

Maggie Mae Fish

Are you recommending "Stalker" as an entry point? The only movie he has an association with that I've seen in the original "Solaris".

Steve Gillow

Ooooooh. I'm definitely looking forward to this.
