Channel Update!
Added 2021-08-14 01:49:14 +0000 UTCEDIT: still figuring out the logistics of the charity stream. Will update with a specific date when I have it!
Hi all! I wanted to give you a quick update about the next few months. We've been putting out a video every month this year, which has been really rewarding but also a bit grueling, so this month we are taking some time to catch up, then in September we'll have a new video up (details below).
Instead of an August video, I'm going to do a livestream fundraiseron my channel to benefit Knock LA ( https://knock-la.com/ ), a non-profit independent journalism outlet here in LA. They do some amazing work about social issues here, and the subject of the stream will be specifically to raise awareness about No Olympics LA ( https://nolympicsla.com/ ). The Olympics is devastating to local communities, especially unhoused people, so we'll have a bunch of guests on to talk about that, as well as other local issues. I also want to spotlight other local issues around the country/world, so if you have an issue you're passionate about, or mention it in the chat during the stream and we can talk about it.
The tentative date of the livestream is mid September. We will probably go for 5 hours or so. I'll be playing Mario & Sonic At the Olympics on the stream, and we'll briefly take a look at some of the Police Quest games, which were designed by former LAPD Chief Daryl Gates (eww), so we can talk about the influence of copaganda in video games.
After the livestream, the next few videos I have (tentatively) planned are:
September: Loki vs Stalker -- looking at how Andrey Tarkovsky's philosophy influenced the Disney+ series, and how weird it is that Marvel shows are now referencing arthouse cinema.
October: David Lynch's Dune vs Flash Gordon -- There some really funny similarities between these two films. And as much as people love talking about what a disaster Lynch's Dune was, nobody seems to talk about what it means. I want to talk about what the hell he was actually trying to achieve with it.
November: Pink Floyd's The Wall vs The Who's Tommy -- I've been talking about doing this video for a long time, and we're finally going to tackle it, as a collaboration with the channel Polyphonic. There are some interesting similarities between the two, but it's also an opportunity to look at the archetypal "rock messiah" in film. We'll start by tracing its origins from Peter Watkins's Privilege (1967), to Lindsay Anderson's If... (1968) and Barry Shear's Wild in the Streets (1968), and see how it evolved from Tommy to The Wall. It's gonna be fun!
Beyond that, I'm still planning on doing a video on Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood, probably next after the Wall/Tommy video. So I'm really excited about what's coming in the next few months. I actually get to talk about a bunch of movies I really really love!!!
Thanks again for your support! I'm grateful that I get to make stuff that means so much to me!!

2021-08-19 16:20:16 +0000 UTCOk about Pink Floyd's The Wall, there's another movie from Alan Parker called Birdy from 1984 with Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage about a man obsessed with birds using it as a coping mechanism dealing with his experience in the Vietnam War. It also has a really beautiful score from Peter Gabriel that as for now Doug Walker didn't make a bad parody album from it yet. Curious to know if you've seen it.
