Upcoming interview...

This week I'm going to be interviewing a legendary film editor (for an upcoming video)! You may have seen me post about it on Twitter, but I wanted to see if you had any questions about film editing that you'd want me to ask. Not sure how much time I'll get with them, but I'll ask as many questions as I can!

When you're editing a project with a very restrictive schedule, what's the first parts of your usual process you'll ditch to meet it? What would you insist on doing even if it meant delivering late?

2021-03-31 10:18:14 +0000 UTCHave you ever watched a movie you’ve edited, and thought “Ugh! This scene would be so much better if I did _____!”? How do you deal with that regret? Do you ever try revisiting your work?
2021-03-31 05:48:27 +0000 UTCWhat are some simple tricks that beginning videomakers can use to improve their personal projects? Because I am SICK of seeing YouTube videos that look like they were edited with meat cleavers by Mole People....

2021-03-31 00:02:44 +0000 UTCIs there a shelf life on that feeling of looking at past work and and either being annoyed because you've seen that project so many times in the edit bay that you are sick of it, or noticing mistakes that you would not make were you editing that project today?
2021-03-30 22:36:04 +0000 UTCPlease ask your legendary editor if they're Walter Murch. ETA: If they are Walter Murch but suffering from amnesia, this may be just the jolt they need to regain their memory.

2021-03-30 21:12:04 +0000 UTCAre editors honing their craft outside of feature projects? Are they editing personal projects, lower budget things, etc, and using them as opportunities to experiment?
2021-03-30 20:16:41 +0000 UTCWhy not use star wipe for everything? But an actually good one, how often are reshoots necessary because a certain edit wanted by the director doesn't make the correct scene transition possible, and when is it just patched up with CGI or a different edit? I would assume after it's "locked" and sent to editing, you just have to make do, but how often do you get access to going back.

2021-03-30 19:40:05 +0000 UTCThe first time I noticed good film editing was when I first saw Goodfellas. I off-handedly looked at the clock after a bit and was astonished that two hours had already passed. My question is: Is "good editing" defined by editing that doesn't make itself noticed as it tells the story, or is it still "good editing" if it's making itself known (or is that more of a "good directing" thing, a la Edgar Wright)?
