NEW VID: Queerness in Lord of the Rings & The Old Guard

EDIT 2: Updated with public link!

EDIT: We were going to release Wednesday, but that's Inauguration Day, and might be a mess. So we will release the public version on Thursday 1/21!

Hey all! This video is kind of a different format, because I based it on an interview/conversation I had with two friends of mine: Molly Knox Ostertag and Lindz Amer. We chatted for an hour, then I wrote some additional stuff to introduce topics and organize our discussion. Not sure if I'll do videos like this often, but it was a fun change of pace. I'm curious to hear your thoughts, on the format and on the content of the video!

This video is like 99% done. I don't think any of the content will change, but we plan on doing a final sound pass, and maybe some other little cosmetic tweaks.

I do suggest watching The Old Guard (it's on Netflix) before watching this video. There aren't really any spoilers, but we talk about the themes of the movie, which I guess you could consider spoiler-ish.

The final video should be out this Thursday. Enjoy!

That implication is definitely accidental! Thank you for pointing that out so I can choose my words more carefully next time!

This is the video that convinced me to become a patreon! I love it! My only concern, and I do not think this is intentional at all, is the following line: "...nor do I want to discount people who might be aromantic or ace..." followed by, "but for those that do see a queer relationship" accidentally implies that aro and ace people aren't queer.

You may be quite right, my dear Maggie Mae, that Tolkien may have had some gay thoughts with his elf and dwarfs and trolls and hobbits. Peter Jackson's movie certainly gives that impressions. But is there more? In one of the novels by Honore de Balzac the protagonist receives a message asking if he would bury a dead man with no questions asked. Since the person who asks is his friend he does as asked. Would you bury a dead body without questions just because your friend asked you? If you answer no, then I think you don't know what true friendship is. True friendship might be disguised gay love, and then again, it might be not. There are two great movies about the subject, perhaps you could research them? Touchez Pas au Grisbi https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046451 Miller's Crossing https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100150 I once added a critic review of Miller's Crossing in the imdb.com that I had a revelation watching the movie, realizing how now one could make such a big sacrifice without being in love. It didn't get a good reception but I still think it's true. Where is the border between friendship and love? Does there need to be one? At what point does sex appear in the picture and does it have to appear at all? I am 57 years old man I don't remember what love or sex mean any longer. But I do remember friendship.

yo this is great. Love this <3

One of my things with Tolkien is some of his late writings before he died had some critical retrospectives, with the middle of writing Lord of the Rings as seemingly a bit of a turning point. Obviously hes not ... great with writing about gender, but I always wish he did more with gender as Eowyn was a super fascinating character to me growing up. Yet she is there in a proportionally small part of massive books.

If you click watch on youtube you should have the option there

For some reason, I can no longer Chromecast Patreon YouTube. This is a bigger problem for me than I would have thought.

END CREDITS STING!!! Also loved this video. Haven't watched LOTR in a loooooooong time, definitely missed a lot.

This was wonderful! I loved it! I’d love to see a queer reading of Neil Jordan’s Michael Collins; the love triangle with Collins, Harry Boland and Julia Roberts has a lot going on, particularly given Jordan’s two previous movies were Interview with the Vampire and The Crying Game.

I really like the format! It's fun and casual while still cutting to your strong and serious narration.

Elena Gray

Yeah, I dont think the video will make much sense if you havent seen lotr, especially

I have a bad confession: I've never seen Lord Of The Rings. I should probably watch the trilogy and The Old Guard before watching the video, right?
