New Video! Snyderverse #2: We're Already Dead

**UPDATED with the public version of the video**

Content warning: graphic violence (zombies getting shot in the head)
Finally! This took way longer that we hoped, but it clocks in at just over forty minutes, so hopefully it was worth the wait! We bounce around, back and forth, between various Snyder movies, so let me know if anything's confusing, or needs more or less explanation. And I don't want to feel mean spirited, so if anything strikes you as unfair or rude, let me know. But also, Snyder's a big boy and he can take a little criticism. The color correction and sound are still in progress, and I still want to tweak a few things here and there.
EDIT: We always do captions for the final video but if anyone would like us to caption the patron versions, just let us know and we will add them!
Also, my friend Princess Weekes appears in this video. She has a patreon if you want to check it out, and her Twitter is @weekesprincess
Content Warning: there's a section that deals with sexual assault in Sucker Punch toward the middle of the movie. When you reach it, I included a timecode for the end of that section so you can skip it if you want.
Thank you so much for your continued support!!

New Video! Snyderverse #2: We're Already Dead

Comments

Hello! Another great video but I do have to point out that Princess Weekes and I hit a lot of the same notes with our take on Superman (I wrote a big comment on YouTube with the first video). So, just sayin' let me know if you need me to be a special guest at some point to talk about all things Geeky ; )

StarMan2112

Agreed. That's the thing that irks me as a Supes fan, he's supposed to be a Moses figure if anything, all the saviour stuff always feels awkward & hacky (heck in the past he even gets uncomfortable when people start veering in that direction.) It removes that " down to earth farm boy with super powers giving us hope & a dad-like pep talk" element and just navel gazes pretentiously into a "maybe we should look at Supes as higher than us, maybe we should worship him". Look at all that BvS "gods & man" talk by Lex, yeesh. It adds so much unneeded distance between common folk and Clark.

too good!

Zack Snyder is what happens when Michael Bay reads Ayn Rand

Also, I've really been digging this overall series, I'm a big Supes fan & I've been trying to read more of him in recent years in my quest to maintain a deathgrip on optimism & hope. I was so so on Man of Steel but as time went on something just would bother me more and more and eventually I just didn't care for Snyder's vision, but had trouble articulating why. Your points knock it out of the park & it's just what was bugging me! I definitely want to learn more about film theory as a result of your vids and also improve my character work and writing hah. Keep up the good work, cheers!

In the snyderverse I die while a super-powered person (hero or villian, doesn't matter) destroys a business district. I try to save a small child, but both of us get smooshed instead of just the child, illustrating how my kindness is folly. 50/50 chances it is framed as funny cause I'm fat. 🤷‍♀️

Another amazing episode, but gal dang, the further we venture into the Synderverse, the more depressed and horrified I get. I remember just being in a horror mood and watching his take on DotD and thinking it was a way to kill time since I didn't have the original available at the time, but with your analysis, I really can't look at the movie the same way again. It's more than just SynderBleak, it's not just a modern remake, it's actually the antithesis of Romero's. I've never seen Suckerpunch, but holy crap, that ending is rather disturbing, I was aware people had issue with it, but ouch, it's awful.

Also I'm scare to see what Christian metaphors I missed in The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Excellent video. I both cannot and absolutely can believe that Zack Snyder directed the Budweiser ad with the horses bowing the skyline were the twin towers were.

Pleasant surprise with the cameo. Princess Weekes is a great content creator.

Thank you SO Much. I was so on board with you, emotionally worked up, and then this sudden shocking scene was used (more than once!) to kinda bludgeon me. I get it! I've done the same thing, I was just saying, where you get so into your argument/reasoning that you kinda go a little too hard. My wife is in year two of med school and we're both just super sensitive to realistic depictions of death, and it seemed a little antithetical to the point you were making (which I totally agree with!) about cultural acceptance of death and violence. Like, we trigger warning the rape stuff (rightfully so!) but so easily forget the violence. Anyway thank you so much!!

Sorry about that! We will add one!

WOAH HEY HEADS UP that footage of the guy getting shot and the back of his head blown out NEEDS A GRAPHIC VISUAL CONTENT WARNING. That really caused some problems in my home. With adults. That was extreme and it's in my brain now. I'm genuinely upset. I'm really glad I saw it before my wife did.

Alan Papercuts

The cop definitely gets a nice ending. There is another Black character i didnt really mention. He has a white/Russian wife who is pregnant, and she gives birth in the middle of the movie... and that subplot is QUITE problematic!

Maggie Mae Fish

I confess to not seeing either DotD but what stuck out to me was how the moral quandary is given to the white characters while the actual resolution is left to the BIPOC character.

Brian Ganninger

Deeper into Snyder than I ever thought I would be, and the journey isn't even over yet, oh no! It is supremely interesting though. And I think you are being very generous to Snyder; his message sounds downright malevolent at times, especially the homophobic stuff, but (if I'm understanding correctly) your analysis seems to extent him some benefit of the doubt; that perhaps he is *trying* to say constructive things sometimes, but keeps tripping up. (maybe because he also wants to say awful suff?) Heh, as to how Snyder would kill me-- for one I would probably cause my own destruction somehow because I hate all that is good and holy so much. I'll come up with more elaborate Snyder-death by the time of release!

Great video--count me in as someone who badly wants to see the original DotD, now! As for possible changes, I think maybe Princess's aside abt For The Man Who Has Everything around 13:51 is extra? She brings good insight into some enlightening past Superman work, but the segment has a different pace from the rest and use some tightening to keep the momentum up imo.

Now I gotta watch dawn of the dead (Romero), thanks for the homework... ;-). I would die in a city bus full of “random” people that Superman doesn’t save, to honor his father’s wishes( who Clark also could have saved).

Rathius

I would note that the Jesus connections date back several decades...Snyder is just much clumsier about it. But what disturbed me awhile back was reading that Snyder considered Sucker Punch to be one of his most personal films, inspired by his daughter and her mental health struggles. He really thought he was saying something deep and positive.

I love your videos! I'm a big movie fan but aren't educated enough on film theory and subtlety in movies to understand them as well as I'd like. I learn so much from your videos. Keep up the amazing work!

Learning Superman is a character with Jewish creators, the Jesus metaphors Snyder and other authors add are... oooof

WGM

Wow! Revelatory analysis. As someone not raised in a Christian household I often completely miss the more subtle ways its worldview wends its way into some of the media I consume, so it always appreciated when someone more familiar with it points these things out. Wish I had some helpful notes, but when you’re on it you’re on it. Mazel Tov!
