New Zack Snyder video! (Saving the Cat)

EDIT: Updated with a link to final version of the video, which has a few different/new bits added!

Hey all! I hope you're doing okay in these turbulent times. Here's the first real video in my series on Zack Snyder, which actually feels strangely relevant, since he loves obscene displays of violence carried out by hyper-masculine authority figures in the name of "good." There are one or two lines I want to add to this video before it's done-done, and it needs a better color pass, and maybe a little tightening, but this is pretty much it! Oh, also I'm working on getting a special guest to send me some footage to include, just to get another perspective toward the end. So let me know what you think about this version, especially if anything needs clarifying :)

Next, I'll be doing an entire video on Dawn of the Dead (2004), since it was Snyder's first film, and tells us a LOT about his values and priorities as a director. After that, I'll probably do theme-based videos, instead of videos centered around one single movie. So the third video will probably be on the gender binary in Snyder's movies, and the fourth will probably be on how he portrays violence/friendship/democracy. Once the fourth video is out, I think I'll be just about burnt out on his movies. I also *might* release a video or two on other movies/directors in between the Snyder videos, since four videos in a row on Snyder is going to just be... draining.

Thank you for your continued support, especially as world events get more and more bananas. I can't imagine what I'd do without you fine folks! Stay safe, and take care! Black lives matter!

Worked fine for me at least, no de-sync issues. Brilliant commentary!

We had some weird de-sync issue around there in the premiere file. Also, youtube has been buggy lately so hopefully we can fix it for the final version. Thanks for the heads up!

Thank you! And great catch. We'll fix the sync there

Has no one else had the problem of the video stopping around 7:36? It just won't load past that and I've tried this on home and work networks :/. YT app seems to work fine on my phone for all other vids.

Thank you for continuing to provide quality content to help distract me from the raging shitstorm that is the state of the world.

Your Twitter announcement made me realise I wasn't already subbed… oops

Love this series, despite not really loving the Zachary.

Extremely interesting watching as always! I thought I understood "saving the cat" (though I did not have a name for it) but I now think I only did so superficially, you gave me a lot more to think about. Argh, I'm not sure if this is nothing but it seemed to me the audio was very slightly out of sync in the shot starting at 7:27.

Every time I watch a ZS movie, I get the feeling that he just doesn't know how to motion picture. He seems to think in comic book panels, and uses super slo-mo a lot, because that is the closest he can get to reproduce iconic comic book imagery within a movie. He just doesn't seem to know what to do with elements that aren't entirely visual, like dialogue or character development. His plots are awkward stumbling from one amazing heroic shot to another. He has worked with amazing actors and doesn't seem to know how to use their talent. It's all about the iconic shots that look good in the trailers.

Brilliant work. Whenever I discuss Cavill's Superman, I note that he never smiles to anyone except to Lois, and that's privately. Everyone else seems like a burden to him. If I were to make any other comparison, and you're probably doing it later, but Snyder is a big Randian/Objectivism fan. So Snyder's Superman is the literal embodiment of Atlas Shrugged, you can almost tell by the imagery of the rocket and seeming disdain for humanity.

Thank you!

Fantastic analysis as always, Maggie. One editing note if you didn't already catch it: the movie audio starting at 10:05 is super quiet. I could barely hear what fictional Neil deGrasse Tyson was saying.

Ooh thats a great idea!

Great video! Very excited for the whole series! If you're looking for any tweaks, I might suggest an image addition to the section around 9:30 where you discuss Snyder's Superman's distance from people. As a contrast the famous page from All*Star Superman where he comforts the suicidal woman ( https://i1.wp.com/www.comicsbeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/htxcyy6opvb21-scaled.jpg?resize=669%2C1028&ssl=1 )from issue 10 feels like it could have a place when talking about Superman connecting with regular humans. I was surprised it wasn't there, TBH. Also including another image of Superman from a printed comic feels like a relevant thing to have when discussing his iconography, considering his origins in comics. Keep up the excellent work!
