change - patron version

EDIT: updated to include final version of the video

Hi all! Here's the preview version of my first video of 2020, and fittingly it's about the concept of change. It's a bit different from all my other videos. It's more of a meditation, and while there are a few comedic moments, it's mostly heartfelt and serious. I talk a bit about my grandma passing. I feel like I have to give a "SINCERITY WARNING" lol... I might do some more meditative videos like this in the future, but the next few videos I have in mind will be more in my usual style.

Let me know if you have any thoughts, corrections, or anything else! I'm really excited to see what you think of this type of video. Also, a few people who are contributing enough to be in the credits seemed to have selected "no reward." I wanted to make sure nobody did that by accident, so if your name should be there but you don't see it, please please let me know! Just comment or shoot me a message on here.

The final version of this video will probably go up Monday, and we already have our next script about 95% finished. And yes, it's an HOUR LONG ANALYSIS OF HOW *CATS* IS ROOTED IN FASCIST PROPAGANDA! It's a wild ride, and I'm hiring a makeup artist to turn me into a Jellicle Cat!!! Hope your 2020 is off to a great start. And thank you as always for your support!

PS: We usually don't upload captions until the final version, but if captions would be helpful for you while watching the patron version, please let us know and we'll try to get captions up for the patron versions moving forward. Just wanted to make sure nobody's left out.

Lovely video essay. I feel like I'm going to watch it a few times more, but the first impression is graduation to the next level. Change indeed.

I loved this. Thank you for sharing. The through-line narrative essay you've crafted in what at first feels like a stream of consciousness monologue is just beautifully executed and really moving. Would really like to see more like this now and then moving forward.

I really appreciate this video. It hits me in a place I'm not comfortable with and I need that sometimes.

Very moving, Maggie. It's nice to see work from you that is more personal. It's often uncanny how often we forget that when the video ends or after the Twitter feed ends, people like you are still people; swept up in their own challenges, struggles, and trials. My condolences for you and your family. Having lost half my grand-parents, each death impacts you, and in ways you worry you're become numb to it. Here's to hoping that doesn't impact you or your passions. As to building walls, it kinda reminds me of a tweet you posted when you mentioned Pink Floyd, and this video made me think about the concept behind The Wall album, how the protagonist experiences trauma and insecurity because of change and because the world outside scares him; adding more bricks to the wall -- until he forces himself to tear it down by the end. Anywho. Look forward to seeing more from you, especially the Cats one. :)

Spirited Away hit me in a special way as well. Our family had just moved from Idaho to Hawaii and the two states are worlds apart as was I. I went from being one of like five brownies at my school, something unique that stood out, to just another brown person at school. The culture change went from white, conservative Mormonism to mixed cosmopolitan liberalism. It was right after elementary school as well. So, I was changing too. And I didn't really fit in anywhere. The cliques at school formed around friends made in elementary school, since each town had their own but the middle and high school was combined, along with gathering teenagers from multiple towns. I didn't like that change. I wanted to go back. Begged to go back. But no. I just had to deal with all of it. Living in a new town, in a new state, going to a different school with different people and not really fitting in with anyone. It was probably the most alone I had ever felt.

This is lovely. I started to tear up at the end. This is an excellent meditation on the inevitability of change and the walls people put up to stop it- thank you for sharing! The contrast between your experience with your grandma's passing and hoarders is well constructed. And super thought provoking. Been thinking a lot about change in my own life lately for various reasons. I'll be navel gazing about this vid as I go about my evening. Thanks again

Really nice, really thoughtful. Loved it!

So hype for a Cats video! 🐈

This was a strongly affecting video. Whole lot of feelings dredged up. I dig the format.
