Saving Christmas! - Patron Version

EDIT: Updated with link to final version.

Hey all! Here's the preview version of my video about Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas, which wraps up my thoughts on Evangelical Christian films. This one feels a little more serious than usual, but I think you'll enjoy it. We might cut a joke or two to even out the tone. I'd love to hear what you think (or if you catch any errors, etc)! So glad to be able to move on to something more fun!

Also, I have a PO Box!

If you send something, let me know so I know to check it.

I tried to find another site to put this early version on, because I want to respect the YouTube Walkout, but none of the alternatives would take an upload of this size, and since Christmas is just a few weeks away, I have to get this out asap (also, the Patron version never gets more than a few dozen views). But I won't post the final, public version until after the Walkout.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!

Thank you! Yeah, I'm definitely moving on to other things. Covering these Christian movies was a good experience, and some of the themes in them will carry over into future videos which is great. But by the time we hit upload on that last one it was like... good lord, save me!! I'm really excited about the next few videos, and I'm choosing topics/movies that are going to be challenging, and focus on works that have more depth. So you wont have that same fish in a barrel feeling at the start. :)

Hi, Maggie Mae! Thank you for another video! I wasn't too enthusiastic about it first, as I don't know who Kirk Cameron is and I find the whole christian movie genre a bit corny, being an European atheist (while a follower of Jesus) and all... but wow, what depths you revealed! Espescially liked the bible-coding bit. You truly are a working man's hero! Still, I cannot help thinking why keep shooting fish in the barrel. I can relate to corny christian movies being big in America, but I would love to see that analytic prowess focused on something more universal like 3 Godfathers or It's a Wonderful Life? Those are lovely movies which I like very much, but still I would be curious what you find out in them. Be as it may, have a lovely Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!

I grew up in an evangelical home; went to an evangelical college and graduate school; passed through Buddhism, then a sort of Thomas Merton Catholicism; and have finally come to rest in atheism. Through it all (including a stint as an associate at an evangelical law firm serving megachurches and televangelists), I've watched American evangelicism turn into a vicious, materialistic, clerical-fascist, misogynist, anti-science, Bronze-Age-era moral monstrosity. This video's reflections on just how uncomfortable those folks are with any discussion of Jesus apart from using him as a superhero (of *The Boys* variety) to put muscle in their demands and buttress their infantile self-delusions is brilliant and illuminates one of the least understood aspects of this dangerous theocratic political movement masquerading as a religion.

Bravo!

Awesome video, better message! A while back I delved too deep into evangelical/neo-con propaganda. Even though it's obvious propaganda, it can still taint your thoughts. Look after yourself. (Also, thanks for telling me about the Youtube walkout. I didn't even know it existed.)

Avid Stan

thank you for spotting that! we should be able to eliminate it :)

I had already known about the movie "Saving Christmas", and it's...message; and I was ready for your video to be a standard take down of this sort of insanity, but halfway through I realized you had a much more profound view on the whole endeavor of these religious messages. You should feel proud for what you have created here. Plus I love you included a Star Trek reference, and basically gave me one (and only one) reason to like "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier". I consider this to be the true Christmas miracle!

If you're open to a report of a technical issue. In your voice-over recording there's a constant noise below 100 Hz. I initially thought it was just an occasional thump when you move your arm, but looking at a spectrogram I see there is a lot of low frequency energy. It goes away when you cut to movie sound. (I'd also be happy to clean the audio up for you, if you don't have the software to do it.)

OK, usually when people say this on the internet, it's tongue-in-cheek. But I mean it: you're doing the Lord's work, Maggie.
