The Stupids! A film analysis

[Updated with the public version of the video]

I managed to get another video out in just half a month! Here it is! It's the first in a new series where I do much shorter, but still in depth, film analysis. It's "movies I wish they'd taught in film school!"

First up is the silly 1996 movie The Stupids, which has a lot more going on for it than I would've guessed. Lots of relevant social commentary, and lots of fun. Let me know what you think! I'll still make the longer, 30-60 minute film analysis videos, but I wanted to create a series that fills the gaps between those long waits. The VHS show is fun to do, but feels more goofy and surface level, so this new series will become the backbone of the channel. If you have movies you'd like me to cover, let me know! Extra chance I'll cover it if it's something no film school would ever touch because it's too extreme or too childish. Upcoming movies in this series: Robocop, Punishment Park, and Uptight!

And we're hard at work on our next big video: a look into the finances of Christian films, both within the narratives, and in the real world! I'm really excited for that one!

THANK YOU for all the kind words! My longer videos will still have plenty of ME in them, so don't worry. For these shorter videos, I'll be in them less frequently since I'm trying to get more content out more often. I'm definitely going to do some more "serious" movies as part of this shorter series, and since they're shorter/faster, I'll be able to cover way more movies. I'll check out Mirror and Solaris and see if it sparks something. :)

Gosh, pressed ENTER too early. Anyway, you know what I was about to say: Bergman, Tarkovsky, that kind of thing. I would love to see you watch Mirror or Solaris, and tell what you think about it. Warts and all!

Thank you, Maggie Mae, that was hilarious! However, the clip had one fatal flaw: it didn't have any footage of you, just the film. Your style of commentary is one of mischievous discovery, where you spot things in the movie that were not ment to be seen. I think cutting to your face at just the right moment, which you have done earlier with a firm hand, serves the purpose beautifully. That was missing this time. The film was just a film, not a Maggie Mae experience. Speaking of which, I would be thrilled to watch you to use your remarkable analytic skills on some of the more serious movies. It has been educating to watch you read the subtext of Fight Club and Infinity War, but how about something more substantial? I very much enjoyed your analysis of Sorry to Bother You, which I suppose is one heck of a movie. I'll for sure watch it the very first chance I get.

No problem!

Also, I'd like to be markchd in the credits, but I'm bad at doing things right

I think we have some interesting perspectives to share on it! :)

I'm excited to see what you are going to say about Christian filmmaking. It's a sensitive topic, but one that could use some incisive criticism.

Next time I babysit my nephews this will be shown

Russell Bauman

This was so thoroughly enjoyable. :)

John Carmack

I have not! I’ll add it to... The List!

Have you ever seen the John Candy movie Delirious? Most people didn’t care for it, but it really cracks me up.
